New cutting but might have stem rot at bottom??

I bought a cutting (university of Hawaii orange) last month and I'm getting ready to plant it but I think the bottom has stem rot. It's very soft and has some brown mush coming off of it. There's only about 2 inches of softness, can I cut it off and save it?
