kitchen cabinet decorations?

We have had these decorations above our kitchen cabinets for 8 years...now I'm reading that most designers recommend leaving them empty. but with my vaulted ceilings I feel like we need something up there to fill the space. any suggestions are welcomed! thanks!

I don't really have a commitment to them but if it's time for a refresh I'm not sure what else to do?!

At one point in my last home I had items above the cabinets (not as pretty as yours) and grew tired of them. When we went to sell the house (very recently), our realtor helped us stage the home and she suggested we put some decorative items (vases, decorative plate) on top again. I guess my point is that it is not outdated but still a valid design choice. Your vases look very pretty. If you want to change things up, you might try reducing to just the vases you have on the right side of the picture but put some of them on the left cabinets too (in place of the items there now).

I’m not a fan. I think they make your cabinets look top-heavy and take attention away from the range hood, which is the focal point. I wouldn’t put anything up there, but it’s your kitchen.

You have a very nice kitchen and I understand your thoughts on filling up the space. However, I think it looks a bit cluttered, especially on the lower wall cabinets and next to your range hood. I'd clear everything off and maybe rework a few of the items.

Totally agree with posters above: it looks cluttered and some items (clock) are too small for the space. The tall vases are interesting, but less: groups of 3 or 5. Keep to one "theme" -- i.e. vases or baskets, but not both. Here in AZ we typically use large colored glass balls (very Mexican) , stars, and Indian vases. Ditch the fake plants. Better to have nothing in our opinion. All best!

i tend to ignore/not appreciate anything that has been in the same spot for more than a month. while 'everything is ok in your own house' you might experiment with changing it up at least quarterly.... sometimes a few things, sometimes nothing, sometimes something different.

I wonder what it would look like if you took it all down and just looked at it. You might discover it looks like a clean new updated space...

Yes, take them down. The clock especially is totally the wrong space for it. All "stuff" above all cabinets. Your feature over the stove is lovely and should be the focal point. Pls take down "stuff" and post a pict.

I think you did a nice job with the original decorations, but I would take them down. Go for a clean slate.

If you decide to leave some decor, remove the clock and reduce the number of items. Beautiful kitchen!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! We are getting the walls painted so I'll take everything down and send an updated pic. And we are buying a new clock...I never liked that one in the first place!

I forgot to tell you that I really like your kitchen. The granite or beautiful island stone is gorgeous with the thick edge. And I love the elegant wood cabinetry. The colors are lovely.

i would take them down and see what the crisp lines feel like. And then add ceiling beams for drama if i felt like it still needed something

Print out the photo and draw a line around the room, following the cabinet tops, door/window trim and openings. You may be surprised at the levels you have going on. Cabinet tops are at various levels. The range "mantel" at another. The opening right of the chimney is another level. Windows on the left and door on the right are two more levels. I would be interested in evening out a lot of that "jagged" line, as viewed from opposite your focal point, the stone chimney. If it takes stuff on top to do that, go ahead. If paint to match the stone helps fade the variation, then do that. Experiment. You may prefer not to draw attention to the "line" at all, and will remove all of it. Or you may add items near the stone to pull the eye to it. Lots of possibilities, so just experiment and find what works for you and calms down the visual clutter, whether it is the jagged line, or the jumble of items.

I would take everything down and also declutter the counters somewhat. You have a beautiful kitchen and it will shine when all the extraneous things have been removed.

Space does NOT HAVE TO BE FILLED. Let it just be for a while and see what you think.

I really like the collection of vases there. By themselves, they are sleek and almost sculptural. So, if you find you don't care for the cabinets bare, I would remove the other items and try placing the vases back, just in the area where the ceiling is the highest and leave those across the room bare. If you don't care for those bare, maybe lower, squatter (but with some bulk to them) items the same material/color as the vases would work. I wouldn't use any plant materials in any of them, though.

You have a beautiful kitchen - love your cabinets. If it were my kitchen I would do a re-fresh by removing everything from the top of the cabinets and everything off the counter. Then -- return back on the counter those items you absolutely need out (coffee pot, etc). Then rearrange your favorite decor OR if it's not your favorite then donate and start over.
