you should get a sofa and then a couple chairs or 2 sofas, though would probably be pretty crowded.

I would paint the walls once you have decorated the room.

i would put the tv across from the sofa. above the fireplace perhaps sculpture or vases? you should also have more lamps to combat any darkness.

Thank you so much. I have a steel grey 3pc sectional . I do not want to continue with a grey theme. I actually want to add fun chair colors and accessories. The article(s) I’ve read said the ceiling should be the same colors as the wall. This would be to detract from the awkward ceiling slope. So ... if I were to paint the ceiling a different color- should I go a few shades lighter than walls ? Paint color suggestions for the room would be greatly appreciated

Paint the walls and ceiling a warm white. Choose a beautiful painting for over the fireplace and relocate the TV over a slim console to the right of the fireplace. This idea though not this style:

Keep your gray sectional if it's got slim lines. Get a great throw and oversized pillows in wonderful colors to add interest and style. Coordinate with curtains and art. Place art on the same wall as the TV.

Oops. I see you can't really put a painting in the corner above the mantel. Leave that space open to the ceiling and arrange a wall of art work on the TV wall over a long, low console as above to the right of the fireplace.

I don't agree with the article you read about painting the vaulted ceilings the same color as the walls - we have vaulted ceilings in our bedroom and living room - the white ceilings make them recede from different color walls. I have it both ways and either one works so do what works best with your furniture/style/feel you want for the room. IMHO it is about keeping the eye on the living space - not drawn up to the vaulted lines in the ceiling - the vaulted ceilings add volume and drama and the illusion of the space being larger but to make them the focal point is a mistake. So, when you create good design, the eye will not focus on the ceilings but the body will feel the expansive vibe.

Did you say you are going contemporary? Your sectional is dark gray with slim lines? Can you send us a photo of the sofa plz?

Here is a photo of my sectional and my tv stand. The sectional is only 1 year old from Crate and Barrel. I didn’t plan on moving so i will use it in my new place even though it’s not ideal. The arms are narrow. I can move the chaise part to either side
With regard to ceiling paint color. If you look at my photo of the yellow room.- you can see a portion of the ceiling juts out. The side walls for a typical cathedral ceiling. I’ve never painted walls and ceiling all the same color.
The suggestion to paint all one color was due to that odd portion. I think there has to be someway to distract that section
I definitely need advice on that. I do think the gal that previously replied - to paint all soft cream is a good option.
I’ve recently only used rich darker colors so I haven’t embraced all white yet. I know I can bring color in with artwork.

What does everyone think of painting all the walls a soft cream (as housegal suggested) but then paint the long wall an accent color; perhaps the light blue from the accent chair above?

Try all white walls first. Use your choices of art, a new chair, pillows, curtains to create color and style. You can always paint an accent wall later. Like many on Houzz, I'm not a fan of them. In your case an accent wall, even in a light color, is going to visually narrow an already narrow room.

The chair and rug are great, but try to make sure everything new that you bring in ties in with whatever furnishings and art you choose or already have.

Does anyone think a pale lilac might work? I’ve never worked with that color but I wonder if it will show more intention than white. It might also skew wacky when I add colorful chairs/art. That’s something I definitely want to avoid.
In the end the cream paint color suggestion is the best advice I’ve received.
If you have a specific color name that’s a standard winner I’d appreciate that suggestion as well.

Here's an article on choosing white as a paint color. As with any color, the kind of natural lighting you get during the day and artificial lighting you will have at night, plus the furnishings you will have all affect what the white will look like. Many people get large posterboard and put it up under different light conditions. Good luck with your room!

I would paint the angles a darker color. How dark depends on how natural light moves through the room. I agree that televisions should not detract from a fireplace, I always understood that a tv should face away from windows to reduce glare.

I'm thinking the visually heavy ceiling angles will be mitigated by a subtle (not dark or mid-shade color) on the long wall and will actually make that wall recede therefore making the room appear wider/bigger.

To answer your question, if you are feeling pale lilac for your space, I would go ahead and try it on the long wall and paint other walls and the ceiling White Dove. The ceiling could be Flat or Matte finish and the walls as well OR you could use satin finish on the walls.
