Plants cranking out pretty well now!

The ants are killing my zucchini plants. ?? They looked great when I transplanted them but they started looking pretty bad , then I noticed loads of ants in the bed ,what can I do ?? I put in little boric acid and sugar traps , will that work .??

I tried the boric acid/sugar traps and the raccoons hauled them off every time I put them out. I used diatomaceous earth with bait in it I got from Lowes. It worked well. Mine were fire ants and would tear me up every time I stepped into the garden.

THANKS... I put out 24 trays of boric acid and sugar , I will keep refilling them until my supply is gone , if it don't work then I purchase your stuff at Lowes, I also get chewed up every time I go out to water ..Those red ants are a real pain . Thanks again

Boric acid and sugar only works on sugar ants. Fire ants like grease, the stronger, the better. Amdro is just ground corn with grease and poison in it.

Mix the boric acid with grits and some sort of oil or grease - bacon grease works really well, but any oil will do. Leaves bits of it all around the garden. Ants are scavengers. They won't eat things left right on their nest (Well, that's not true. They'll take a bit of it, and leave the rest, which is why putting Amdro on top of a nest is a bad idea.). They prefer food that they find scavenging, preferably about 2 feet from the nest.

For using diatomaceous earth, cover the nest with it, then stir the nest to get them out running around in it. They need to get it on their bodies so it can cut their shell up and let them dessicate. I keep them away pretty well with the diatomaceous earth, but it has to be reapplied if it rains.
