Backsplash help!

We just purchased this house, and while I like the cabinets and countertops I need help with the backsplash and that weird tile "shelf ." any suggestions?? I was thinking white subway tile backsplash, but I've no idea what to do with that tiled "shelf."

You already have a BS. I am not a fan of putting tiles about the four-inch BS. Would you consider moving it?

Add a bowl of fruit or some canisters.

Did you decide? Did you get any help elsewhere? The Kitchen forum is probably better for backsplash advice interest.
