Awesome Suzanne! Do you think this green makes the house look too washed out? It might be too light. Maybe the Cilantro (above in mforr's post) or that lagoon would be better. We're narrowing it down and it's definitely between a lagoon-ish color and a sage-ish color. Thoughts?

Whichever color is chosen, I think the side light panel should be the same color. The brightness of the white makes it stand out and kind of looks odd. It being the same color as the door would also give the door more presence.

My vote would be for a deep red or a deep cobalt blue.

I am in the minority here but I think painting a front door has to be taken seriously and not just some pop of color because you want a change. It is the entrance to your home. I don't understand when I drive around and someone has a yellow or red/blue door and it doesn't relate to anything else on the house. I would think about a deep green almost forest/army green for your house. I would also paint the shutters. Honestly, just cleaning up your landscaping and plant colorful flowers would help a lot with the curb appeal.

I think the sidelight looks better white because the screen door is making the door and the sidelight appear to be different colors. The white sidelight and the screen door both being white makes it more cohesive, as well as making the door color stand out more.

I agree tennis that the color needs to relate, except if the house is neutral and the color doesn't have anything it has to "work with." :)

The light next to your door should be approximately twice the size.

Sherman Williams has a Sun dried Tomatoe which will give a pop, but is a earthier red If your shutters and trim were Urban Putty you could paint the door St Barts', I do noy know about the dark plum, I have seen it on a lt grey house with dark grey trim and it looked great.So you could paint the trim and shutters Downing Earth and pull it off with the Valspar Regal Plum, you just have to get a balance with the shutters/trim and door, that way it won't go beyond pop to poop. I see someone is playing with a house color changer. try the 2 I just suggested and see i you like it, you will know right off when it feels right to you.

I think bumblebee has the right idea: paint the door and the sidelight the same color. I vote for red, or a deeper shade of the Lagoon (more of a peacock blue), but the Lagoon and a darker shade of the Nurture Green would be pretty, too. All of the colors will help your landscape "pop" against the door.

P.S. I would leave the shutters exactly as they are; they help tie the dark roof (which is fairly imposing, given the pitch) into the rest of the façade.

Great classic house! Yes the Lagoon, paint the side lights to match and also, paint the storm door to match as well. It will make the entire entry way seem larger.

This is not the best photoshop but it is just to give an idea how much bigger the door would look like if the storm door and the side door were painted the same color as the door.
Camille, I prefer lagoon over nurture green. I agree the nurture green makes the house looks too washed out.

I agree with others to paint the door and sidelight with whatever color you choose and if you decide to keep the storm door paint it as well so that it looks like one harmonious focal point.... Great house!

I vote for Sherwin Williams "Pickle" (slide #10 of the TOH article Amy Wax posted)! It would look great with your landscaping!!!

I personally like the BM "Great Barrington Green" (sort of an olive) on slide #16 as well, but I'm guessing it isn't the kind of color you are looking for.

Paint your metal screen door too so the sidelight reads out.

valspar regal plum is much richer than the color on my screen, and I love it on my door and shutters. Keeping your shutters black, red or any bright color will look good. Pick your favorite that goes with your flowers. or add flowers to match new door color. valspar has some spray paints to match their exterior paints so you could paint the metal frame of the storm door to match door and Side light.

Lisettemmm Gorgeous red would look lovely, also frame of screen door and side windows should be red. I think that the door should be the only thing red on your house and therefore be your focal point!! TRUST ME!

I forgot to mention, do not paint the small window area white, BIG MISTAKE, no triming, everything should be uniform therefore pleasing to the eye and I personally think that "Red" would look just great on your house!

I think the Front doors should be an accent colour or you may say they should be a strong, dramatic, bold shade. With this Midas Touch, your home will look like a million bucks and your neighbors will be wondering why they didn't think of it.

A more burgundy would look nice!

Hi Camille, I have to agree with you, the nurture is a little washed out. My vote is for the lagoon for "pop" or for a more natural green to tie in with nature outside. Greens such as cilantro would be charming and will always relate to something, the great outdoors!! :)

If you prefer more color and like the warm side of the spectrum, you could go with a brick red door with terra-cotta accents (still earthy). Sorry about the quality, but I just used microsoft paint quickly. I like the idea of 2 shades since you have the screen door. Painting the border around the perimeter of the shutters adds a bit of harmony with the screen door over the front door.

You have so many great options at this point. The nice thing is that you'll need about a quart of paint and can do it yourself. If you don't love it you can change it until you think it's perfect.

Burgandy or Plum! Try a wreath.. Target has hooks with a 3m no mark adhesive. I have it on my glass and it survives 80 MPH wind temperatures in the negatives to the hundreds.

A few shades darker than the vinyl.

Ok, I think you're all right about painting the side light the same color as the door and painting the screen door trim as well. If the door os going to be a focal point, the whole things needs to be a part of it. Landscaping will DEFINITELY improve as we just bought the place and haven't yet done too much with the front. Mforr, I agree with the lagoon for pop and a natural green. I know everyone loves the red, but the door is currently painted a deep maroon and we really dislike it, so going to stay away from reds. But Cliffordhome is right which takes a little bit of pressure off: it doesn't have to be permanent. If next year we want a new color-it's an easy change. Thank you all for your helpful ideas! Will keep you "posted" on progress!

We think a red color would make a nice statement. Don't be afraid to test out many colors. You can paint test "strips" on the door to see how the color will look.

Bright yellow for sure

Thanks to everyone here who gave such colorful insight to my front door dilemma. After hesitating for too long because of fear of choosing the "wrong" color, we simply picked a color we fell in love with and that made us happy. I figure if we get tired of it, or wake up one day and hate it, it's just paint! It's time to start having more fun with color!

Here is a picture of my shed that I painted with the turquoise but I added green as an accent and the beige is my house color like yours. Not sure if you want to go this "cute" on your house but you get the idea of adding more color. The first stroke was very scary.

Red and yellow were my 2 choices before I read all the comments. Seems to me you don't need to go too far out in left field to get a great contrasting color. You don't need a color that asks " what were they thinking?"

Nice color but I personally think that you should have also painted the screen door trim and the sidelight, then it would have made a big impact! This way the door looks a little too small! Sorry!

Also black hardware on this color door wiould look gorgeous (don't forget the little knob on the screen door)

I still think you have to carry that color around elsewhere for it to make sense so I do agree with that statement by lisette 15 and the sidelight should also be painted. Maybe when you think about plants, think blueish like hydrandgeas. I picked up those colors of my shed from pillows I have on my deck and the turquoise picks up the pool. I like you, decided I wanted color outside. If we get sick of it we can repaint. Not sure if bcmonroe was referring to you or me in "what were they thinking?. Its only paint.

Orange door with black shutters would look good also. The orange shutters would be a bit much.
