Root Training Process

I recently posted a question about the root traing process (see "Ramon Martin You Tube Videos") but had no comments so I thought it best to try again.. In the video, Mr. Martin, not only cut the roots and caudex, he also clipped a portion of some of the leaves.. The video has limited dialogue and does not offer an explanation of why the leaves were clipped. Can anyone explain the reasoning for this?
