I would change out the wall color..for much lighter neutral...add a jute or woven textured wool rug..remove long mirror over sofa and add art...good way to bring in color if you prefer...otherwise I like the idea of sticking with neutrals.

I would take down the mirror and make it useful somewhere else , add artwork with color scheme that match the wood floor (since you said it has an orange under tune i feel like it standout in real life not in a good way ) , as for the rug I would go to a light gray or white to give the space some light it look dark from the photo.

I don’t know if this is too messy a look for you, have you thought about linen or canvas loose slipcover?

Jen any green or blue paint on the walls is going to intensify the yellow golden floor color...

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I agree the room is dark- had a hard time getting a good photo because of that. Repainting the room isn’t an option now but I do like slipcovers for sofa/chair and lighter color rug to help brighten space. Good idea to replace mirror with art. All great ideas!

If paint stays continue with all neutrals to lighten things up...I really don’t think slipcovers are necessary...I see you hav dogs that love to cuddle on them...I think the dark brown is very practical..will not show everyday soiling...maybe add a oversized throw blanket in a nice neutral...art will really help lighten up that wall over sofa..right now the mirror is really just reflecting the darker wall color....you could also replace the big brown chair that matches the sofa and add another chair like the one next to the fireplace...would really look great!
