Redoing dated laundry room

8 years ago

Our home was built in the 70s w/coordinated oak cabinetry throughout the house. We are renewing for ourselves and also to put on market in a few years. We're looking to minimize work in kitchen (keep original custom cabinetry in place) and try to do workarounds in kitchen and adjacent laundry room relative to cabinets. Our big ticket items are going to be two bathroom remodels and hardwood floors. Anyway, here is the before/after in laundry room, kitchen is next!

    Nice job!

    Pretty wallpaper. This setup is perfect for our current times where multitasking is a necessity. One can use the toilet while putting a load of laundry in at the same time!

    Thanks for your comments! It was amazing how long it took!

    @immcnitt - I've done that, LOL! At least before retiring. . .

    @Michelle - you could open the cabinets (although we don't open them THAT much), but you had to swing the light out of the way. You are the second person that has made that comment about these tiles.

    The window is out to a covered back porch where we entertain, the slats give a lot more privacy. although it is a bit of a light "sink".

    I was advised by some to remove old wallpaper and not replace it with new as it was considered "dated". But this wallpaper just isn't IMHO. We did take down all the wallpaper that was in the kitchen/nook (haven't painted yet) and dining room (have painted, and love it). Thanks again, this is my first post on the HOUZZ forum.

    Laura - I was quoted $1800 to tile a very small laundry room (maybe 5x6) with 8" hexagon tiles. I showed the tiles to a designer friend and she LOVED them. They were a charcoal color and the texture was more like clay tile. I have too many other projects to do, so an $1800 floor in a tiny laundry room isn't where I'm gong to spend money right now. Anyway - your floor is awesome!

    And it's not just in the laundry room, it continues in to the kitchen and to the front door! So in walking in 3 doors (garage/kitchen/front door), you are on the tile. (I'll be posting pictures of the kitchen/nook soon for opinions on upgrades.) The beauty of it here is that this is a farm property, and although we don't wear shoes in the house, it still helps with dust/mud/etc that you carry in with you. This house was built by a contractor (his family home) and although dated in some ways, is very well thought out. We were lucky in that regard!

    In regards to your tiles, I have noticed lately (on Houzz) that people are using large hex tiles in their bathrooms, I've seen several dark/charcoal pics that look terrific. I'm with you on the $$$, this little laundry room wasn't inexpensive.
