What color is the walls? It is very hard to tell, the room looks dark in the photos. I would suggest an area rug (lighter colors) and a large wall mirror on the wall across from the window to lighten up the room.

I had to close the curtains to get the picture which is still crap quality because I took it with my iPad. The room is a khaki green color...very neutral.

I like the artwork. I’m keeping the paint. I really like the color. And it looks great with my curtains that I just made last week. The big wall has me stumped. It needs some art for sure. I just don’t want to get it cluttered. I can/will remove the other wall decorations. I’m going to move the wine wrack out at some point as well...finishing up a new floor in the basement before that gets moved.

I’ve considered adding another piece, but it needs to be long and narrow. And I haven’t found the right piece yet so I’m settling for art in the meantime.

I think a larger piece would be better on the wall since you have a lot smaller furnishings maybe two of them can be placed somewhere else. How about this for the longer wall

You have a lot of space in this room. I'd add another serving buffet. It will provide storage and allow you extra surface area for food when you're doing a big dinner like Thanksgiving. It will also provide a visual anchor for any art you decide to add.

For me, art is something accumulated over time. Rather than buying a generic reprint, consider looking at your local artisans' works and seeing if anything appeals. Or if a family member does beautiful needlework, consider framing some. Many galleries have rent or lease options as well, so you can try before you buy. You can often get original art for quite reasonable prices (so long as you don't want someone famous!), so don't rule it out. It's wonderful to have beautiful, unique things around us.

I’m the same with art which I think is why I’ve never found anything I really like.

Oh, and FYI, the pieces I have are not small, it’s that the room is big. I like to have lots of room when we have dinners.

I see from your profile that you're in Iowa. What about something from the Iowa Artisans Gallery? I like this one and think the colours might go well. And it's an interesting contrast from the traditional flavour of your room.

Lower the chandelier.

In such a large room, invest in a statement piece on the long wall, an arts and crafts china cabinet that will hold ALL of your stuff, and get rid of the other pieces in the room. Add a couple of good-sized Mucha prints in light colors, and a rug.

Grover- that is a perfect piece. I’m not sure about a rug only because I have small kids which mans messy eating sometimes. I’m going to search out a piece of furniture like that. I had already planned to remove the other stuff. I will look for some artwork like you have shown. Thank you!

PS: The other pieces will likely stay. The barrister case was a gift from a friend and the other pieces we bought to hold our wedding crystal and antique dishes that we use frequently.
