Citrus

My original plan was to put fruit trees all on one side together. The rest of our area is traditional trees and bushes so far.

The nursery told me I could put citrus trees amongst my traditional trees and bushes and it would work out just fine. Would that really work from a soil needs standpoint?

I have a wildfire Tupelo that has space for a small tree on each side. I originally was asking about redbud trees for those spots, but the nursery said I could put citrus there too. I just am not convinced. But maybe it’s because I can’t see the overall picture.

Thanks for all the help. They all went on the one side of the yard where I originally had planned on them being. It's on the same side as my raised garden boxes so all the edibles are over there.

The variegated lemon ended up going right next to a smoke tree (the "corner" where the trees and bushes continue down the long side of the yard)... and the contrast is really neat.

Oh. I bought a variegated eureka lemon, a peach, and a mandarin. If that helps too.

Yes but. Yes you can but it will take more effort to get them established and thriving. Citrus roots are lousy at competing for nutrients. Your established shrubs and trees will find the citrus' roots and do their best to infiltrate. Just know its possible, and it will take 2x food and water, and perhaps preemptive digging to keep other roots away from the citrus.

I ripped out 30 redwoods - yeah! But i kept all the other shrubs and trees... it took a year for me to realize which i was really feeding and how to compensate.

Also you don't want to limb up your citrus (don't "lolly pop" them) but leave the foliage and branches low on the trunk. If you look at photos of commercial groves, that is how they grow them, and they do that for a reason.

This is because the citrus trunk and roots are sensitive to heat and sun scald. The low foliage protects those sensitive roots and the trunk, especially important in the summer heat of the central valley.
