I don't think you will find the throat size for quilting with only 4x4 hoop. But there are many sewing/emb machines to choose from.

I'm familiar with the Husqvarna Viking line which should be accommodate much of your wishes. The latest issue of the HV Epic or its sister Pfaff machine (don't know the model name) both have larger throats, but they won't be taller. They're large and aren't the kind you put away each time you use it. Also,be prepared for sticker shock. Best idea is to visit local major sewing machine brand dealers to test drive machines and sometimes they have good promotions or decent prices on 2nd hand machines. I would stay out of Walmart if you want a sturdy, dependable machine.

Hello ssdarb. It's been more than a month now. What did you get? I started sewing purses, pouches, sunglass cases, etc. just a year ago and am now looking for a new machine. I have two Singers and I've learned so much but can't believe it's taken me a year to realize that I need dual feed/IDT or whatever they call it so that the top and bottom layers are fed at the same time. I'm curious as to what others have.

NancyJG, you should be able to get a walking foot for either of you Singer machines. Its purpose is to feed the layers together, and it costs far less than a new machine!

Thanks, I already have a Singer walking foot, but it's clunky. I know the Pfaff's have lots of different feet for the IDT, not just one.

I have Husqvarna Viking and really like it, but I do not use it for quilting. My sister has an old Bernina, which I like even better, but it's quite a bit more expensive.

Nothing better than a Janome for quilting without a hitch. Sews cotton beautifully. The 6500 that I have does NOT do knits which has made me stop sewing clothes, since I'm spoiled for stretchy knits. (I have to stop being intimidated by my serger.)

Two weeks ago I settled on the Pfaff Expression 4.2 and absolutely love it. It has IDT (the built-in walking foot) and automatic snip. What I especially love is that it has a tacking feature at the front and end of stitching that is barely noticeable as one of its stitches (#52). It also has the knee lift so I can use both hands. It's easy and a dream
