transition space

Hello, I would like some ideas for the transition space between my dining area and living room. The cabinet I have there now is too small and too dark. The space between the window and the couch is approx 8 feet. I thought about finding an old cabinet and refinishing it but not sure I want to go through all the work, plus I have no idea what colour the cabinet should be. I have included some pictures of the dining area and living room so you could see the colours I have. Also, what should I put on the wall above the cabinet once I get one?
Thank you.

Without being able to see the entire living space, and without knowing how you use your space, I would say get a larger piece of furniture (and by larger, I mean longer), get something in either a lighter wood (so that it doesn't match your flooring) or a totally different finish (like mirror) and I'd decorate the top of it to be a small bar area and hang a mirror over it.

Thank you, I thought about a longer cabinet as well just did not know what colour it should be, I did not know if I had to match any of the other wood in the room.
The dining area is used every day as we do not have an eat in kitchen, the living room is used as a sitting/conversation area when we have company.

8 feet is a good amount of space. Can't see the other side of the room but have you considered orienting one of the sofas so its back is to the dining table and having it float in that open space?

Joe, I only have one sofa, the other side has two chairs, it's a nice conversation pit that I really would rather not change.

I am going to give the navy blue idea some very serious thought. Thank you.

Love the idea of a navy piece. But, before you buy a new piece, consider a pair of tables with table lamps on each side of the sofa. Is the lamp on the buffet there because you don’t have enough lighting? Is there a lamp or floor lamp between the two chairs? You could move the side table and lamp from the corner over to this side as a test. You might not need a new sideboard. To help balance your wall, a wider piece of art over your sofa would help. Is your art piece wider than your buffet?

Bette P I the lamp is there because I do like more light in the room. I really want the cabinet where it is because I store stuff in it i.e. Tablecloths, napkins, serving trays etc. So i thought if I had an end table beside the cabinet it would look odd. I will upload a pic of what is opposite of the couch. I know the pic is a hit small but I just love it and want to keep it.

You're welcome. I think it would help you avoid bringing another wood tone into the room and really stand out against your walls.

I'd move the cabinet over about 18 inches towards the sofa, and move the plant from the corner to beside the cabinet. To me the plant looks squished in the corner, and would look good beside the cabinet.

Also move the sofa and end table away from the window a bit. Your sofa and end table look a bit tight there. Furniture looks better with a bit of breathing room - 6 inches between everything there.

I agree with Partim, the furniture needs to be moved further away from the window.

I would pull the pair of chairs away from the window too, at least 6 inches. And space everything on that side a little more apart too. We can't see the door into the room but unless it is a very narrow door, don't worry about the chair overlapping the doorway a bit. Also switch the 2 chairs since I think it might look better with the smaller-scaled brown chair closer to the doorway and more angled.

Just tweaking things but it does make a room look more spacious and welcoming if things are not pushed together.

I moved them. I agree about the furniture being too close to the window, but am not crazy about the plant and cabinet. Am going to buy an old cabinet and paint it blue I think.

Actually the brown chair is quite a bit larger, I originally had them the other way around and it overpowered the room.

Looks better I think. Try rotating the plant 180 degrees so that the fuller upper area is facing the sofa.
