I don’t know why that first photo looks so wide

Dimensions are 105” high x 54” wide x 33” deep. It is a big house and I do have a lot of very large paintings & we may want to put a narrow bench or chest on the floor ( or maybe not )- but where the mirror is will be a painting

oh dear. perhaps half? work with your electrician first, to decide how much space you need for the lighting. you need a good angle to wash the whole painting.

this one is just a downlight that was already there, not nearly as effective.

the mirror is just on the wall until we figured out what to do w/it! The wall will have a painting still large, but not as wide as the mirror. I have a few to choose from so my question is really about the depth!

i think if the artwork plus frame is the size of the mirror minus the frame it will be ok.

anyway, i think it would look odd to have the light outside the space and the art in....

I probably wouldn’t have thought of it until after the fact! So, the can light in the ceiling for the art- should be within the recessed depth.....Am I understanding correctly?

My MOST urgent question! is how much should I furr out this recessed area? Currently it’s too deep & looks odd. I am thinking of making that area much shallower maybe 12” 18” 20” ? More I think about it , more I’m decided To not put a bench there-the one I had in there temporarily just ended up collecting stuff and no one ever sat on it- I have art that will fit width-wise into that space that range in height 7’3” , 5’9”, 5’6” to 3’5”

all between 3 to 4’ wide

I do plan to use a painting with a lot of strength for that spot- but again it’s a painting and not a sculpture so I don’t need it to be extra deep.

If you do have a piece of furniture and a proper light for the painting there, then one can just think of this as an interesting architectural idea, and leave it as it is. Without proper lighting it would be problematic.

If you fill it out, I would think a 4 inch recess would be plenty, BUT forget putting a bench or console table there if you do that.

I would start with a deeper chest instead of bench, with art above. Maybe use a medium size art piece plus a skinny lamp on chest.

Hi. What did you decide on depth? I have a large scale art piece 48x48 and was planning on doing 12” built in cabinetry on either side with a 4” reveal. The depth of the artwork is 3” which means it would be recessed 9” surrounded by shelving. Seems like it will get lost if the artwork isn’t bumped out about 6”.
