I would just bring the lines of the garden bed out further and lay down some hardwood mulch or a rock mulch so that you can see mulch between the lawn and shrubbery. Still keep the same curved shape, just bring it out another foot or so and it'll look good with a natural edge. :)

Pull back the grass line about 2-3 feet and then if you are set on keeping what you have you may want to consider re-planting them in a different layout to maximize their look. Also what you currently have will drive what you choose to do with the pulled back area. If you are going to put in annuals then there is a good chance they will dwarf what you have there. You can also accent the area by laying down small patches of decorative stones to compliment the house color and help what you have to pop a bit more.

I think your garden could use some unique accessory to give it the definition you are looking for. I would suggest having rain chains. They can be hung from the corners of your roof, attached to the gutter system to guide the flow of water gently to the ground. Its a great alternative to traditional downspouts. Another great way is to have copper planters. These indoor or outdoor planters are constructed of sturdy fiberglass and coated with a real copper outer layer. They can help transform your garden into a wonderful oasis. Lighting spells a difference. You can either use hanging lantern or post lantern to give it the final touch. Hope this helps!

Where do you buy those copper pots? They are lovely. Decorative solar lights (e.g., flowers, sun jars or lanterns) that look pretty by day and shed soft light at night.

lepstein, i know they are lovely but its actually a rain chain. they can be a great alternative to those ugly gutter and downspouts that we use at home. i can suggest you check out more style that they have here http://www.capecodweathervanecompany.com/Rain_Chains.. They also have copper planters!

They do withstand normal winds but hurricane force they may not.

You could go with a stone edging like Buechel suggests.

Plant some color along edge of grass. Adding a large tree in middle of yard with flowers, would help. Nice yard just needs color and variety .

granny- what would be the best type of bird bath would you recommend to use?

Succulents already in the ground...wanted a corner of my front garden dedicated to them. If I put them in a bowl or birdbath, they would not overwinter. This way, some of them do. No problems with wildlife, except the occasional drunk kind from the bars down the street. Thanks for the suggestion, though. BTW: We have an amazing succulent greenhouse nearby that gives classes for container succulents and wall art succulents. Beautiful.

If you want an edging, something to define the lawn/bed areas and make it easier to mow, think about installing a concrete paver edge. Laid, flat on a compacted crushed rock base, it makes a nice edge and you can rest the lawn mower wheels on it.
