Bosch Benchmark or....??

Hi All,

My wife and I have just purchased a new house and one of the first things we'd like to attack is the kitchen. Over the past few days i've started researching appliances. My early thoughts were to buy individual appliances that met our needs. Through my research, Bosch Benchmark popped up in almost every appliance. This got me thinking should I go for all Bosch Benchmark (rather than a mixture). Here are my early thoughts of what we were looking at.

1. Double Wall Oven - Bosch Benchmark or Miele were the ones that jumped out most for me, we were looking at Wolf also

2. Cooktop - Thermador or Bosch

3. Dishwasher - Miele or Bosch

4. Fridge - struggling on this one, we don't feel this is something we'd want to splurge on - we're looking at Samsung or LG - I read that Bosch isnt highly regarded here

Looking for any thoughts or advice.

Thanks,

For appliance info your best bet is to ask in the Appliance Forum

Your choices are all good. Look at the specifications and figure out which offers you more of what you'd like. Without taking budget into consideration...

Ovens - between the two, my choice would be Miele with a combi-steam and convection pairing, not two convection. The bells and whistles would be worth it, to me, over Bosch.

Cooktop - gas? induction? For gas, a really low output for gentle simmering would be my #1 concern. For induction, hob sizes that accommodate my largest, and most used, pans. I'd say half power steps but that's moot with the brands you're looking at.

Dishwasher - I chose Bosch because it's more energy efficient. Either is great when Bosch's top tier is considered.

Fridge - this category is the luck of the draw. There isn't one that stands out for longevity, few service calls, and ease of getting the company to back up its warranty. My friend's Samsung stopped cooling 6 months after purchase. It took ANOTHER 6 months of service calls (weeks between each) before Samsung finally replaced it.

Our fridge is the most used appliance. It's accessed regularly and needs to cool efficiently without overcompensating and freezing produce. I spent a fair amount of money on an Electrolux all-fridge but think I'd have been happier if Sub-Zero had been in my budget.

    No manufacturer is without problems.

Sounds like we had some of the same thoughts on the appliance selection

My appliances are sitting in the kitchen waiting for cabinets. Here’s what we decided:

Double oven: we went for the bosch

    stove: thermador rangetop

    dishwasher: Bosch

Fridge: kitchen aid with the freezer at the bottom and the water dispenser in the fridge. We have a reverse osmosis filter so we didn’t feel the need to have it outside the door

Miele was out of our price range but I did consider it. I have a Miele vacuum and love it.

Our appliances haven’t been installed yet, so I can’t comment on their performance. Hopefully they will be in at the end of the week. Good luck on your decision!

I second alex’s opinion, the fridge is the only appliance you never turn off. It ought to be your splurge. This forum is chock full of bargain hunters who got amazing appliances for rock bottom prices. If you’re willing to wait, watch, and learn you may find a floor model SubZero, like I did, for thousands less.

FWIW, European dishwashers are small. If that’s an issue for you, go with an American brand.

I would consider Kitchen Aid before Samsung or LG. I would actually be fine with Bosch for a refrigerator though. I have a Miele and my understanding is that Bosch's refrigerator comes out of the same Turkish factory. I am very happy with the Miele.

Bosch fridges are actually the same as Thermador fridges.

Thanks for all the comments. As I was doing some researching today I saw some of the new redesigned Thermador items. I really like the look, they remind me heavily of Gaggenau and i like the tech/connected aspect. I think I’ll hold any decisions until I see them in person (not sure when they’re actually released) hopefully they’ll continue their aggressive one-two-free rebates.

Noted on the fridges. I’m starting to really like the idea of a column fridge (prob 24”), column freezer (prob 18”) and a column wine cooler (18”). We better increase our budget!!

I loved my Bosch Frig and DW and MW but I did not like the range... I just made an commitment to KA for my kitchen reno. I think Bosch is a fantastic product. And maybe the ranges are better. I would research the name Bosch to see what information comes up. You might be surprised..

Here is what I recently wrote about our range in another link....

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/dual-fuel-range-bosch-vs-kitchenaid-dsvw-vd~5180922

I had a Bosch range in my last house. Bosch is generally a great product. All our appliances were Bosch. We had a Dual Fuel slide in Bosch range. It had some issues. While we only had to have it repaired once under warranty I would not get another.

    Cons...

    1) It would get stuck on, and the only way to shut it off was to turn it to high and then lower it to get the fan to kick on. Annoying.

    2) The Fan is really LOUD.

    3) Another negative is there was too much space between the grates and one of my tiny pots would tip over when sliding it across the grates.

    4) We had gas on glass but it was NOT easier to clean. In fact it was probably more challenging because the burners were not sealed so food would get down inside. You could turn it on high and burn it off.

    5) The glass window into the oven could not be cleaned. It just frustrated me. There is a range by SMEG that offers a way to pop out the window and clean it. But SMEG is a looks not cook range.

    Now for the Pros

    1) The grates can be put into the dishwasher and come out looking brand new. I love that!

    2) A great range to cook on. The water boils super fast and the simmer is perfection. A great range to cook but maybe not the best out there.

    3) The pieces are solid and made well. A great german product.

With all that said, I am getting a Jennair or a Kitchenaid suite of appliances. I know I know they are sisters and made by Whirlpool. Bosch is a German company that also makes Thermador and Gaggaenau, I believe they are all a part of Siemens. And Siemens makes great products. I just want to try a different brand and I am hoping that the bells and whistles with Kitchenaid are something I will love

Bosch-Siemens acquired Gaggenau in the 90s but I believe that manufacturing has stayed separate, with Gaggenau staying in it's French and German factories. Bosch labeled appliances are a global effort, with parts from various countries and assembled in the U.S., for the lower end. Mine was "German-made", which could have meant assembled. I assume Thermidor is global, as well.

I adore my Gaggenau wall oven and miss it SO MUCH while waiting for a forced remodel! It's robust, performs far better than anything else my friends/family/I use. Is quiet and brightly lit. One thing I dislike is the oven bulb. Changing it is so difficult that I broke it trying and, the replacements are awfully expensive. Still, the overall quality has spoiled me rotten. I thought my Bosch dw was the bomb but would never put their cooking appliances in the same category as Gagg.

I'm looking at the companion combi-steam on eBay, even though it's discontinued and a risk.
