adding another pic-opposite side of basement room

What is the room used for and how many people use it regularly? I see TV/FP but not much other indication of how your family uses the space. If it were mine, I'd be organizing a conversation area around the FP and putting a TV gaming area elsewhere. We actually need more pix. What is the area behind the lightswitch wall that seems to divide the area? Would that make a good TV and gaming area? Then you could put a game table or pool table out in front of the window. Can you sketch out a rough floor plan and tell us what your family would like to do in this room for entertainment?

here are a few more pics which should help define the space better. Great idea to flip flop the areas! it is my husband and me with a college daughter passing through at times . We host the major holidays with up to 40 people throughout the year so we need pieces that can be moved around to accomodate temp tables and chairs. we also host card/game parties 6-8 people every so often as well.

Well, moving a sectional out of the way for a party isn't easy. Do you rent tables for the big parties? Are you going for all new furniture? What pieces must stay or can go? You appear to have plenty of can lights, but need some table and floor lamps. I see there is a kitchenette. Could you use more cabinetry above it? Just trying to get a feel for what will make the space functional and then we can work on pretty.

The sectional breaks apart we usually push that against the wall into pieces and it works OK. The dark furniture, the oversize chair sofa recliner dresser in table are all going away. Kitchenette area, we actually have a different kitchen at area in a side room so we use that mostly for a sink/wet bar. We typically line a buffet along the wall with a few tables for food then dispersed tables throughout the room. They are 4' tables and card tables. We typically set up seating for 18 -20 downstairs and when the weathet is nice seting outside. People eat in shifts and there is seating upstairs as well so we have been able to make it work.

What is to the right of the kitchenette?

door to back room storage with stove and fridge. other doors are bathroom snd spare bedroom. behind the kitchette is the stairway

So you already have designated "zones" within the room. Corner fireplace area for conversation, center wet bar for drinks and table games, and the far side for TV/gaming. Does that sound feasible to you?

I would add lots of ottoman seating ..once you get rid of the dark furniture ..and have fun ...people love sitting on upholstered benches or different size ottoman seats at parties ... It's a great space ...do a little at a time enjoy and see what else you need ..the last thing you want to do is clutter this great space up . At a party you want to be able to move around sit here and there ...!
move the dining room table against the wall and use it for your buffet table , once the dark furniture is out ...put the chairs against the wall somewhere ..in groupings to be pulled out when needed ...
It's a basement with Windows to where ..a terrace ? Open up or get rid of the drapes and put outdoor lighting and plants to look at ..or an outdoor seating area ..to incorporate with your party space... Have a large screen somewhere and make a Cine area ...so much you can do.... You need to figure out what your daily needs are for fun uses down there and how to incorporate this with your party needs .
