The iron are just TIRED, overdone and shouldn't be done in 90% of the homes they're done in as they don't go with the style of the home. On top of it that cage style is dated. Circa 2005. I think the money you're potentially spending on this project could be used elsewhere.

I didn’t realize they were out of style. The majority of new construction homes have them. I go through them periodically for ideas.

We went with the single twist and single basket, alternating every other. Love them.

When the cheepchinesecrapola knockoff painted metal makes it to the shelf at Homey Depot, you know the fad is over. And when cheepchinesecrapola knockoffs populate every entry level tract home, you know the fad is over.

Now, if you live in the French Quarter, real wrought iron is appropriate. But nothing so plain.

I love mine! I couldn't zoom in on the picture I liked all the rods to be the same with just a basic twist - I've received tons of compliments. I don't think they are dated in fact I feel they care coming back in stye.

I think the wood fits better with your house. Spend the money elsewhere in your home or just bank it :-)

Do the new models you visited have stucco, brick and stone work exteriors? The iron goes with the Tuscan look.

Your house and furniture looks to be Georgian/ Colonial traditional/ transitional. A classic style. Those houses look good with the white spindles, wood treads and white risers, with or without a stair runner.

Here is one with simple rods, but i still would not spend money to do this as a retrofit.

Some are brick/siding, no stucco. I have stone/siding.

I'd keep the white spindles -- they are classic.

I love wrought iron. They give an elegant touch to a staircase and low maintenance and durable. Just clean with soapy water once in a while. No more paint chips, no more worn wood, no more broken spindles and no more painting. Wood spindles are a pain to paint. They are ho hum boring in my book. I would do the double and a single basket.

they don't read 'updated' to me. that doesnt mean you cant like them, cant do them, but it doesnt feel very fresh.

I like the metal...it seems to go with your taste for black accents ...is more interesting with the delicate detail than the simple ones you have now...and it is a huge presence in the room so will make a nice change without shouting.....as to whether it is right or now or fresh....these things are more likely to become dated than your replacement choice....as to the layout I like the third pic with alternating 2baskets and one basket...no plain filler posts...

I would suggest you may want to paint the rail in white for a more dramatic effect....

After noticing you only have two posts per step it may be better to match all the posts...at the very least bring enough home to get an idea how the basket variations look as the steps ascend

We’re about halfway done and I LOVE IT!!! Changes the overall look dramatically. We decided a double basket and single basket on one step, then the next step with two twists and alternate it going all the way up.
