Need all new Door Knobs --Which look best???

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi all,

These are my doors for the upstairs bedrooms, closets, bathrooms. I really like these square Emtek knobs, but everyone in my family does not. And they might be too modern - I'm not sure? So, I am thinking about these round baldwin crystal ones, but would the backplate look better oval or this other shape?. And, do you think the pewter is too dark since the hinges are satin nickel. I just like the way the crystal looks against the darker plate.

Thank you,

Should I look at levers?? I never liked them in my previous home because I felt they caught on everything -- Anyone else think that??

I think the shaped Baldwin knob would compliment the trim very nicely.

i like the dark one. It's a tall door w/hefty trim work,,,you don't want a puny door knob that will disappear.

First of all, I love glass door knobs and have been buying vintage ones for my vintage house. I love the middle one that is against the dark wood the best!

Yes, Bev, I love crystal glass door knobs too! I'd choose the pewter backplate if you like--even though it's darker than the hinges, it's still in the same cool color family. However, I prefer a classic round backplate.

I do not like the feel od square knobs for doors so I would stick to a round one but I have to say that huge trim above that door is not good at all.

I would do the "Old town crystal knob" on satin nickel Oval rosette. by Emtek.

Better price point as well then Baldwin.

Thank you all! I guess none of you mentioned levers which I thought you might. I like the square one because it looks big and bold, but I'm worried it's too modern. My husband hates it anyway.

Patricia - The molding too tall? That's my fault. I chose that after seeing some Houzz photos as inspiration....

That glass knob is over the top IMO. I think the egg shape knob is more interesting.

I don’t care for levers. They look like they are for hotel rooms and your clothes sometimes get caught on them when you walk by. I would use round door knobs.

Levers. Really handy, especially if both hands are full. Plus, if this is your forever home, they are better to age in place with.

oth, I love levelers. they're practical, as we age, and can often be quite beautiful.
I started installing them in my homes 30 years ago. no regrets.

While I can appreciate the convenience of levers when my hands are full, I seem to get caught on them. My coat, the bag over my shoulder, my dry cleaning, etc. The front door is the place where I need the lever the most. Whenever I'm carrying a bunch of grocery bags, I can't seem to free up my hand to open the door. Does anyone use a keyless entry for the front door? Maybe I'll start another post....

    Prefer the rectangle.

Had levers on exterior doors -- they were not that comfortable to use and were often in the way. The main thing you want is to be able to hold onto the knob without needing a lot of pinch/grip strength and the first, larger one would do that.

If you want to go crystal, I vote for the one with the oval backplate since the door have a curved design on it. I am a big believer in matching all of the hardware. We have the egg shapes knobs that someone mentioned above and LOVE them! :)

The square one really has nothing to do with the neo classical door and trim detail you have.

Thanks everyone. I was afraid the square one didn’t match the style of the door. It is, however, easy to turn because of the corners.

I like the square one best, but if your family doesn't then I would go with the middle knob pictured.

Square door knobs are not user friendly. There's a reason round knobs have been around since forever--they feel good in your hand!

Oh really, Diana? I didn't know that. It felt nice in the store. And I love the way it looks like a giant emerald-cut engagement ring! haha - I guess I'll stick with the round one......
