Under mount Stove Hood

Do any kitchen designers know of a pretty stainless steel stove fan hood that would fit (correctly) under a 15”cabinet? In our last kitchen, the fan was mounted forward on the cabinet to make it fit, but the fan extended outward an extra 3”, insuring that my DH hit his head. Don’t want to make that mistake again. ModernAire makes hoods that are squared, instead of having a slanted angle. A randomly picked example would be the model PS-16. The picture shows it without any cabinets. But nothing stops you from building the hood into a cabinet.

If you are willing to pay enough money to have it custom-built, they can make it any depth that you'd like.

You can either mount it closer to the surface of the stove (i.e. at or slightly below eye level). In that case you probably want it to be less than 24" deep, as it would otherwise be in your line of sight. Or you can mount it about 3' above the stove. This would allow you to put your head underneath, and you could thus make it extend all the way towards the front.

Exact placement probably depends a little bit on how tall you are. I suggest building a mock-up from cardboard and verifying that you don't bump into the hood and that you don't have it block your view of the stove.

I’m sorry if I did not make this clear — I have a 30” Kitchen Aid stove below a 30” wide, 15”deep cabinet. Would love a stainless steel hood. Thank you for any help you can give. K

I am not sure if I am understanding you completely, but I think you need to know that the hood should be much deeper front-to-back than the upper cabinet it is hanging from. That is so that the hood can exhaust cooking smoke and grease from the front burners of ranges. Ranges are at least 24" deep front-to-back. If the hood is only 15" deep you will have spent money on a hood that can't even do its job for the front burners.

Ideal depth of an exhaust hood would be 24" deep front to back to ensure coverage of the front burners. However, that depth tends to be more expensive and people typically get a hood that is 20-22" deep. Your worry about your husband hitting his head is misplaced. The brain figures out where the hood is within 1 or 2 uses, and he won't hit his head.

Thank you for your input! I am finding that looking at the specs for the stove hoods, they all seem to be for a 12” depth cabinet over the stove — to make it fit for a 15”depth cabinet, it must be mounted forward 3 inches so that the front of the hood aligns with the front of the cabinet. This moves the hood forward 3” over the stove. I guess no one else has ever had this problem.......

Ah, now I understand your question. You can simply buy a hood that is deeper, at 24-27" front to back. You can search for hoods with those dimensions on sites like ajmadison dot com.

Or, you can "bump out" your hood. You put a 2-3" deep block behind the hood, so that when you mount the hood, it is bumped out a few inches. You wrap a strip of stainless steel at the bottom and around the sides of the block. It's straightforward, and actually good for ventilation as it brings your hood to cover the front burners more.
