Fence issue with neighbor

Hello. I just got a new PVC fence. I am on a corner and told both neighbors (side and behind) since they have dogs and hey share my fence (they don’t have their own). Now, the neighbor behind me decided to ask my fence installer to install a matching gate for his yard entrance with is perpendicular to my fence, but now it sticks out smack in the middle of my fence. I am so annoyed and wish he would have told me so we could figure out a solution. Do I say something or say something to the fence guy who did my fence? We moved there in September and I don’t want to cause problems but I’m really pissed. I’ll attach a before and after picture.

So I guess I don't understand the issue. You don't like how his portion of fence looks? Because it barely sticks up.

I'd live with it. I doubt you'll notice it in 2 months and it's not worth creating bad blood with your neighbors.

Ok thank you. Yes I guess because it’s a new fence and looked so nice and was then annoyed that’s sticking up. But not sure if I’m just being overly picky. Your probably right.

I would just be happy he used the same type of fence and didn’t mix it. Either way it’s on his yard there was little you could say or do.

Let's look at it this way, at least he used the same fence so it's not clashing in style. He probably could have moved the gate to the post of your fence, but I guess he was looking at his house and yard separately. I honestly wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't pointed it out.

Yeah, you'll get over it. Think of it this way: your neighbour was courteous enough to choose a fence that matches yours.

None of your posts lined up to where he wanted his gate, so he had to put it up as a separate unit. I didn't even notice it, its really a non-issue.

I’d be more upset about the peeling paint on his house!

Straining at gnats. Save the good will you'll need when he starts parking six old cars in his driveway that don't run.

Thank you @ latifolia .. yes I don’t like looking at his house and was thinking of maybe even putting up arborvitaes maybe eventually. Thanks for your opinions

True story! My friend wanted to put in a fence and share the cost with neighbor but the said no thanks.....so the fence was installed....then neighbor who had said no fence, put in his fence to connect with my friends fence....my friend talked to neighbor who said no way am I paying for your fence even though we share a lot line....so my friend called his fence company and had them move his fence two feet back onto his yard...the neighbor was furious so had a new fence put in where my friend had moved his....then my friend had his fence moved back two feet to where it was right next to the neighbors fence....the neighbors moved.

Wow Susan. It's unbelievable what some people do with fences.....

What was that about good fences and neighbours??

@Najeebah what is your photo showing what it would look like to put a tree there??

"I'd be furious too if my fence company took orders from my neighbor. Any reputable fence company wouldn't do that anyway without the owner's say"

You could be furious, but it would be a separate job, an unrelated deal between them and the neighbours, nothing to do with you in the least.

Not on your land, not on public land, not affecting your land, not affecting your contracted job, you'd have no case.

"@Najeebah what is your photo showing what it would look like to put a tree there??"

Yes trees. Absolutely nothing you can do about the decent looking fence on your neighbour's property. If it still bothers you plant some trees.

I had to read this whole thread to figure out what the "problem" was-lol.. I guess if it was me, I'd be happy that the dog won't be running free and pooping in my front yard. Hopefully the dog won't be barking all day from being fenced in. You may end up with bigger issues with the neighbor so choose your battles carefully..... and plant some trees to soften up your own fence line.

Did y’all split the cost of the fence? Did the neighbor or fencer tell you about the door that was added?

I don’t think it’s worth getting into arguments with neighbors, but maybe it won’t be an argument and it’s just a matter of letting them know. It might be worth mentioning it if you have a doable solution in mind.

No they did not split cost at all. The question was nothing about a dog i think maybe you misunderstand the problem was the post that’s sticking up now above my new fence

I don't see nothing wrong with pointing out to both of them about how the installer didn't properly level the gate, since I'm sure your neighbor had meant for it to be a uniform look with yours that had just went up and that didn't happen.

    It's really a non issue.

I understand that people have attachments to and opinions on their environments, but you don't control it all.

That is a someone else's fence on their land, behind you at that. It's barely noticeable, but even if it were, say he'd painted it yellow, gone higher, whatever, you wouldn't have a say.

He might not like that your house is built a metre too long for him to see the sunrise. Does he have a say?

This is a total non issue.

what else would you have expected the neighbor to do?

This seems like a very standard thing to do (to add on to existing fences)

im surprised you didn’t ask your neighbors to share the cost that was very generous of you to pay for it all yourself, however, it still seems like the neighbor didn’t do anything wrong

No I did not ask them to split the cost because I think that would be rude since it’s my fence and we are new. I think it would have been nice for them to offer.. which is why I was pissed they didn’t tell me they were going to put up a gate and if they did, then we could have worked together to make sure the posts aligned better. That’s really what i am pissed about. I just asked a question for advice since i am a new homeowner. please don’t reply like @Lila with a rude comment. Thank you all.

OP - this is really a non-issue. The neighbors could have put in a much more obtrusive fence in a completely different style that would have been far uglier. Like the saying goes, don't sweat the small stuff.

Very true tatts. Some people enjoy the nature of their yard, and while a wooden fence ages and blends in, a big plastic white stripe across nature could be jarring.

So just be happy that they arent annoyed by that.

Like I said.. not the question I was asking. I can’t believe how rude people are on these sites. If you can read, I had the courtesy of going over to the neighbor and letting him know exactly what type of fence I was getting and it actually matches the exact white PVC fence he has on the other side of his yard which he mooches off the other neighbor. PVC fences last forever and much easier to maintain. Please don’t say things that aren’t helpful to the person that’s asking the question.. no point in responding at all then, especially when you don’t even know what you’re talking about @tatts @CarrieHund.

I was just asking advice ... people are just not nice that’s all. I appreciate the people who just gave me advice plain and simple ... I’ve let it go. Like I said I am a new homeowner and knew this was a site to ask questions like this. So thanks for your help

Saying your fence choice "sucks" is not being nice.

There are some less than helpful posts here.

I wasn't talking about that neighbor; I was considering all the others in the neighborhood.

Make your neighbour a compliment for having the same great taste for fences as you do and invite him for a bbq. Good neighbours are so important, you might need and help eachother.

Hard to tell what is worse, neighbors that don't contribute to a shared fence and then connect their fence to it, or "houzeers" with their lousy comments. Good job 29 for putting up with both.....

Oh, I'm sure the answers would have been much different if the dilemma was "I want to put up a fence, is it ok to ask my neighbours to contribute toward the cost?"

Now that it's done, and the neighbour's fence is done, and the question is "what, if anything, should I do about it" the only rational answer is "Nothing. You'll have to live with it. This is not the battle you want."

I think we can all understand why it would be frustrating to have your fence hijacked like that, though of course it bothers some more than others. It's just most of us have lived long enough to know you don't start a neighbourhood war over ten feet of fence.

I think it’s still so funny to hear people’s reactions to a simple question.. my simple questions AGAIN as a new homeowner, was do I saw something or not.. so the simple reactions for advice could have and should have been like. “Don’t worry about it” or “not a big deal” which some were.. but it’s just funny to see the negativity, across the globe , of people who are just DAMN nasty!!! I’m sorry I’m gonna take myself off this site and complain to Houzz.. seriously. In shock of how people are honestly...

it actually was a question.. do I say something or not? Again thanks to the people who just said let it go.

I'm guessing the neighbor's land is slightly higher than yours, thus the "higher" posts. I didn't even notice it, but you can plant some trees/shrubs if you want to block it out.

Time to plant a beautiful border garden along your new fence.

Plant something tall/wide enough to cover that window they have as well-- they can see into your yard from inside their home.

I'd be very glad they gated their yard if their dogs run all over. I feel sure they didn't mean to offend you.

People were being rude. They weren't able to help because they have no clue about how to give advice. People who say things like ''glad I'm not your neighbor!'' and ''this is a non-issue'' obviously have abusive personalities and those tendencies show when instead of offering advice to a new home owner they dismiss somebody's situation, you are a good neighbor who sought out advice of pros and other homeowners way before taking your own action that is so considerate because it's obvious you would never want to intentionally offend your neighbor. Property lines, curb appeal, and views are all a big deal for resale and property values, the neighbor is copying your fence by putting up a gate like its his fence after you put it up, it seems pretty weird to me. All your posts are level, and his gate posts are sticking way up in the air!

If a post is abusive or offensive you can always flag it. If you report it as spam or abuse Houzz will look at it and remove if it doesn't fit their posting guidelines. If you mark "I just don't like it" it will disappear from your view of the thread and you never have to see it again.

Good advice from Lindsay. I felt bad for you with people’s responses. On here I’ve seen people melting down over their grout being greater than 1/56th inches in certain places or what to do about their nannies sitting room in their 8000 sq ft McMansion. And I’m thinking (but don’t say) -“Really”? But what constitutes a dilemma for each of us is what makes this site interesting.

Looking at the pictures, I realized that because it is in the middle of your fence panel, the neighbors had to put in a post to start their fence. So actually, they did NOT tie in to your fence. They just built a fence that happens to be just next to yours.

You can see in the picture that is exactly what happened.

So all they did was put up fence posts and panels on their property. The fact that there was an existing barrier on the side of their property (that no one asked them to pay for) is something that wasn’t their decision. Yes they benefit from it, but so do you, which is why you put it up

this whole thread would be different if you had asked them to pay and they refused.
