Ho-hum master needs some TLC

I’m looking for help w/ my bedroom. It's a good-sized space but not a lot of options due to doors (entry, double closets, bathroom) and the built-in. This is what I specifically need help with, but I'm open to other suggestions....

1. Curtains: They're too short & the previous owners hung the rod, I think it should be higher, but how high? Any suggestions on what to replace them with? Color, texture, print/solid? I know they're all wrong but I don't know how to make them right.

2. The pics above the bed are too small. I was thinking of adding something coastal between them (an anchor, star, mirror?). If they’re still too small – what should I replace with?

3. The white monstrosity built-in cabinet, while ugly, it’s great for storage. I’d love to make it less of an eye-sore. Should I paint/add hardware?

4. The mirror is new, I think it needs to be hung (?), but it’s really heavy & I’m not sure if that’s a good spot for it.

5. The TV…. I’m not a fan of a TV in the bdrm, but we love to watch SNL in bed. Should we mount it to the wall?

6. I love my duvet but hate those big pillows, would appreciate help styling the bed.

1- Curtains: Those are definitely hung wrong. I'd rehang the rod about half way between the ceiling and top of the window. The curtains should just brush the floor too. I also suggest going for something darker, maybe pull the darkest blue from your bedding.

2-Pictures: They are too small. They'd look nice hung one above the other on a smaller wall. But art should be about pieces you love so look for that then when trying to figure out the size put pieces of paper to work on the layout before hanging

3-Cabinets: Maybe add some handles/knobs? Paint it a fun color? Navy would look nice.

4-The mirror is a little too short to cut it as one of those leaning ones. I'd hang it on that wall or on the back of the closet door.

5-TV: Also not a fan of the TVs in bedrooms but hey, if you use it that's fine. You could mount it but that won't really impact how visible it is. You could also get an armoire or something that it can be hidden in. Or paint that wall a darker color so the TV blends in.

Also a few other suggestions, a rug would be nice. Taller lamps too! But I like your color scheme, very relaxing, and love your ceilings so it's a nice room to work with! Don't be afraid to play around with things.

Beautiful floors! And you’ve pretty much identified all the issues.

Yes, larger art over bed. Matching table lamps. Paint the ‘built in’ a dark color. New curtains rehung at proper height. Center tv on console or hang. I like the idea of painting this wall dark to minimize the tv as well.

    And those floors....

More thoughts, lol. Consider removing the built in or at least the vertical element. That truly is out of place. As for the bed, are those pillows for sleeping or show? If for sleeping, cover them and add decorative pillows. If for show....uhhh....maybe start over?

Thank you! Very helpful feedback & I’m still listening
if there is more advice. It’s easy to ID problems -- not so easy to fix them.
I’ve hated that built-in since the day we moved in but it never occurred to me
to do something about it – I LOVE the idea of painting it navy blue!

Noisycats – I think the floors are original to the house
(1880s) they are nice but need some TLC. The big pillows are for “show”, I hate
them too – lol – thank you for giving me permission to start over ;-)

I would buy white pillow shams, perhaps in a raised jacquard pattern, with the pillows that fit in it, and remove those from the bed every evening, and just have sleeping pillows which will go under the duvet when you make the bed, with shams going on top, and perhaps small blue pillows in front to tie in with the duvet. I would get a rug that goes under the bed so that you can step on it when you get out of bed but still extends quite a bit beyond the foot of the bed, i.e. covers most of the floor, for a soft and luxurious feel.

At first I thought the angles over the bed were symmetrical, but then I noticed that the wall on the left side continues to slope all the way to the floor, and that is where the built-in is located. Could the built-in (without the vertical piece) be repositioned under the window, or is it too high?

    My thoughts on your dilemma(s):

Curtains-I don't think you have enough room for stacking proper sized curtain panels without covering up a lot of your windows and losing a large amount of light. Consider a roman shade in either fabric or a woven wood to bring some texture into the space.

Built-ins-if you don't like them, you might consider removing the vertical piece and painting them the same color as the walls to help them disappear. A contrasting color would enhance them. If you like that idea, the darker blue pulled from your comforter would be pretty.

Artwork-I agree that the pics over the bed are too small. Something larger in a landscape format would work better over the bed.

Duvet-I agree that the large pillows don't seem to work. Could you post a close up picture of the duvet fabric so we can accurately see the colors?

Mounting the t.v. won't make it go away so I would just leave it. Perhaps add a pretty decorative vase and a few pictures to the right to balance it out a bit.

Mirror-Maybe you could find some sort of easel or stand for it so you can angle it in the corner.

This one says it hold up to 40 pounds. https://www.tripar.com/listing.php?id=LS-56000&category=easels_floor

I also think that since the space on either side of the bed is not even, you might consider swing arm wall lamps that can save table top space on your night stands.

If possible, I would remove at least the built ins and replace with a smaller dresser.

I would hang larger art above the bed.

I would change the curtains and do something like this to make the windows seem taller. These were the shorter windows in my dining but I hung wood roman shade on the outside of the windows and then hung my curtains to the ceiling. It makes the room appear much taller than what the shorter windows made it look like.

If you can hang your tv on the wall centered with the dresser.

Hang the mirror and get 4 pillows to fit the bed and use white or cream pillow cases.

Get larger lamps for the bed side tables that match.

Consider a rug to ground the space. Perhaps seagrass or jute.

You have a lovely room! Just some ideas to take it up a notch.

I am going with the last post...esp the drapes hung high with blinds to camouflage the short windows, I have done that before and definitely works! Large art above bed a must. Tall ceiling is emphasized ,focus on beautiful bed, make it dramatic! Kick the bedding up a notch, and more pillows. Could be your favorite room with just a little tweaking.
