Eeeek this kitchen! Help!

Thinking about buying this home. We love the home in other ways, but not this kitchen. It’s big, The cabinets and counters are fine. (I don’t love them but can live with given expense. But I was thinking we should: put in hardwoods, all stainless appliances, and a backsplash. Does that sound right? Anything else? Any suggestions for backsplash? Also is $20K enough for that?

Thank you for any suggestions! This is NOT my thing! :)

Not sure about the cost. You can probably price out the appliances and get a close estimate based on square footage for the flooring. I don't see a range hood, which you may not need if you change out that gas stovetop on the island for an induction - which I would recommend anyway.

The only eek I see is the island cooktop. Why do you think you "should" make the other changes? Are you planning to flip it?

I’d start by just painting the walls and adding a nice runner to the floor to break up the blandness. Then I’d live with it for awhile and see what I thought. Is there something wrong with the appliances? Not being a fan of stainless I’d leave them if not though the mismatched black cooktop would bug me.

I wouldn’t invest in a tile backsplash if you don’t love the cabinets.

I agree with Toronto Vet, 20K might not even cover the appliances and new counters..But this kitchen is lovely and you can definitely work with it.

If you love this house and decide to buy it, list the wants and needs to make yourself happy in this kitchen. Live with the space for a few months and think about how you can improve it.

Some thoughts that come to mind... Do you like having a cooktop on the island? What about a hood? Do you like them? Are those 2 dishwashers? Do you need both? Or maybe one is a trash compactor. One positive you don't have to contend with is a soffit, that can be a real challenge to remove. You already have light above your cabinets which is great. That large beautiful window brings in bucket of light. Very lovely! Do you have other photos? I wonder what is on the left side of the room? Maybe the cooking area could go in a different spot. Are the cabinets solid wood? They might be able to take a stain if that is something you like.

It has a lot of blah with the tan on tan on tan, but that window pretty much makes everything okay. I'd paint the walls, plop down a runner, and wait and see.

I'd live with it for a bit before making any changes. That window is lovely. I think this kitchen looks bland to you because there aren't any personal touches. Who lives with absolutely nothing on the counters? Only people who are selling their houses and only because they were told to get rid of all personal touches.

There’s a white double oven on the other side

I would reface the cabinets with white doors if they are in good shape. If the doors blend in with the appliances I would leave them for now and just replace the cooktop. Hard to tell what the counters are. I would replace with quartz if they are laminate. I would start there and see how it looks. You might want to recolor the grout on the floor tile to blend in more with the tile.

Oh! You are lucky! I would love to have those double ovens. I think you will like that kitchen once you are in it. I wouldn't make any major changes until you've lived there for a bit to see how it works for you.

I agree with the comments about price for your wish list. While I tend to prefer stainless, in this kitchen, the white is very appealing to me. There is a lightness and serenity to the space. I can understand the dark cooktop, as one splatter of oil on stainless is a smear to be cleaned continually. For me, the downer is the floor. It reminds me of 90s modest ceramic. That's what I'd redo. To remove and replace might take half your budget Personally, I am not a fan of hardwood in the kitchen because I like to scrub. As I shop on line for a house, the cooktop in the island with no ventilation hood is a major problem for me. Depending upon your cooking habits, you may find everything works for you. Wait on the backsplash until you decide on the rest. You really should live there a bit to experience working and cleaning in there.
