'When you buy a variety that suppose to be able to produce tops in quality, do you think you will get that growing in a container, not to mention cold winter temps and shorter mean temps.'

It really depends. Some varieties of citrus do better in pots than others. And I guess it would depend on how you are wintering over your plant. If you are fortunate enough to have a greenhouse or able to grow them in the ground with some kind of additional heat and protection, or otherwise recreate the environment to the liking of that particular variety, then I don't see why the fruit wouldn't be good.

But if you are working 'against nature' with less than ideal growing conditions, such as storing the plant in a dimly lit, cool spot to winter it over, then you might be at a disadvantage. A late season variety may not the have conditions favorable to sweetening up.

Since I don't have a greenhouse, I am sticking with early ripening varieties, or ones that don't require a great deal of heat or light in winter to ripen. I'm growing early satsumas, mandarins, and key lime. This is the first time I've seen any blooms on my Clem-Yuz, so I'm hopefully optimistic I'll get my first fruits on this one!

PacNorWreck: First time bloom on this maybe 5-year-old seedling. I see three small fruits set on. We'll see if they stay on! Grown from seed from a Virginia Beach (zone 8) plant in the ground.

Fruit taste is why I am going to graft an NZL to a sour orange rootstock.. Rootstock is more important than in ground for great tasting fruit. Heat makes sugar while cold breaks up acid.

Steve, it has been so long since I tasted the fruit, saved and planted the seeds and now, finally, got it to bloom....that I forget. I THINK it might be 2-2. I recall it tasted pretty good and was worth starting up some from seeds.

At the time, I had dreams of actually growing it in the ground, but after the last 5 years winters being, on average, so horrible for citrus, I decided to just keep it in a pot.
