Hello Betty, Gardening in shade can be a real challenge, some additional plants to consider area: Mahonia aquifolium, Leucothoe fontanesiana, Dicentra spectabilis, and Polygonatum multiflorum.

brick patios are shade loving, too. i'd grow a big one if it was my yard!

Sarcococca is a nice evegeeen shrub with winter scent. Of all the varieties, ‘Confusa’ gets the tallest.

I would check out hardiness issues before opting for some of the plants suggested......several will not survive a zone 6 winter or will suffer significant dieback if they do!

Yews are always a good choice for a shady garden but grow slowly.

And if deer are present, your choices are severely limited.

Mountain Laurel/Kalmia latifolia is an evergreen to consider, and I like the suggestion of Leucathoe, though I don't know the best species for your area. Yew is a deer favorite.
