Corner fireplaces are outdated regardless of finish. They are bulky and take up a lot of the room.

With that said you can make it disappear a little bit with paint. Going with the nautical theme, paint the brick a dark blue and install a driftwood mantle.

Also, think about having an “eyeball” recessed light above it, on a dimmer, a few feet back , to highlight a nice piece of art above ... might turn out to be a nice feature in the room after all. Rather than the one placed in its current location.

Don’t paint the brick. You say you are on the lake. Embrace the view, the warmth of the fire. Paint the walls a warmer color. Place a comfy chair near the fireplace. Love what you have. I like old even when some say outdated. Charm and comfort at the lake is more important than this new fresh stuff. I’m a lake person.

I would not paint the brick - it's classic. Pull a neutral, warm paint color from one of the brick for the walls. The mantle should be lower and larger, maybe done in reclaimed wood or knotty alder. Or whatever would compliment other trim in your home.

Nothing beats real brick. I think all the "stacked stone" currently being used, will be the next thing everyone wants to change in 10 years.
