Runners beside bed or area rug under rug?

I'm still in the process of furnishing our new home. The master bedroom has beautiful hardwood floors, but I would prefer to step onto something soft when I climb out of bed. What's your opinion...a runner alongside the length of the bed, or an area rug that would go under the bed and beyond the foot?

I would not cover the visible floor. Put a beautiful carpet under the bed that is large enough to extend 3 feet on both sides that way you have texture and warmth.
