Paint the walls too.

What look are you going for? What style do you like? Are you planning to use hardware—knobs or handles—on the cabinets? Any preference for the material— brass, ORB, nickel? What color is the countertop? Do you like tile—subway, patterned, glass? Is this the only area you’d be putting a backsplash on? Is there more of the kitchen not in the photo?

An off-white subway tile would be one safe choice.

Not sure what you’d like. Some would say you need to remove the 4” back piece first before adding tile. Here are some looks that might appeal:

Granite color is baltic brown. I am new to this and don't know all the options. Looking for something which looks decent. There is a buffet cabinet under which also I will be putting the backsplash and also below the microwave. Total of 3 places. Attached is the complete kitchen picture. Thanks for the help!!

I agree with jhmarie that the knobs are a great choice and that the smaller tiles may not be the best option for your kitchen. I’m not fond of the impact all those tiny tiles have, plus the scale just doesn’t work well.

I’d bring some tiles home and try them out. Between the color of the cabinets, the granite, and lighting, what looks good in the store may look different at home. I’m conservative when it comes to tile and think of it as an element I probably wouldn’t change once it’s installed, unlike paint color or decorative accent pieces. Committing to an intricate pattern, vivid color combination, or trendy style may not be a good decision in the long run.

Your knobs are setting the style for your kitchen; they are different and traditional. The horizontal visually busy back splash tiles you have shown us read contemporary and do not coordinate at all with your Baltic counters.

Sorry to offend but the 4" granite back splash run is now considered a dated a look. I understand you just installed them and to remove them might not be an option. Therefore, in order to minimize their impact in your kitchen I would recommend a back splash tile which is very similar in color and style to your knobs. Making that visual link will be pleasing and beautiful.

here's a direction for you to consider. I think it would connect your pulls and counters in a beautiful way. There are other patterns for you to consider.

Just chiming in with a practical eye. I think the knobs are stylish -- but will be a bear to keep clean in a kitchen. The copper tile also with an embossed rather than smooth surface will be challenging. But maybe you don't cook much--or have help with cleaning?

Maybe a travertine subway

You really only need a back splash behind the range up to the hood to protect the wall from cooking grease, and behind the sink to protect the wall from water splashes. Any more backsplash than that is decor and not a necessity. Covering less area means you can splurge on a more expensive option you love. One option other than a different tile for the backsplash is to use the counter top material behind the sink and stove. Use washable paint on the walls.

I think that travertine is too pink - it clashes with your yellow walls. Are you planning on repainting the walls? I also don't think it goes well with the countertop.

I'm sorry but I really dislike the travertine. How does it make a connection between the dark patterned Baltic slab and the cabinets? It does not.

travertine can have a pink tone to it. doesn't look good w/what you have. will you be removing the 4" piece?

you really need to lose that yellow on the walls. it's throwing off the coloring and just doesn't work.

this is a walnut travertine, and the lighter is the ivory. see how pink it is? you don't want this color.

I can't remember if this was porcelain or a pale limestone, random bar. but this would workAmerican Olean 3x6 glass tiles. i think Home depot has these online.

CleTile has these glazed bricks in various earth tone colors. 1.25 each.

i am planning to remove the 4" slab. I agree the travertine has pink to it which is not matching the paint. Was trying out options.

I would go with a beige/off white ceramic tile. I would also paint the walls & add hardware to the cabinets.

Actually the paint color is not yellow. Its beige. I attached new photos. Thanks for all the help everybody is doing.

VZ,,,so what I see in the granite is brown tones. I would not do a stark white or even off white. I lean more towards browns and tans

the two on the left are Athens Gray marble, and the glass is a 2x16 frosted in Macadamia. You said you were removing the 4" piece, so that will make a big difference in how this tile looks. the glass will give you more of a modern feel, especially if you stack it as opposed to a off set subway layout. The athens gray marble (comes in tons of shapes and sizes) is a cooler brown color. order a sample or go to a tile place that carries Athens and bring one home

BTW,,,I hope you're doing cabinet hardware? any idea if you're doing a nickel or a darker one to match your door hardware?

this bronze mirror subway matches your granite perfectly. if you want something a little more modern with reflective qualities, this could work. comes in a 3x9 beveled subway tile, and a bronze metallic tile in a 3x12 porcelain subway.

I am going to checkout at my local Tile Shop first on the samples and will give them a shot.

Beth is awesome! Whatever you do - get samples and look at them in your kitchen. Photoshopping it is helpful to get a sense of the pattern, but you can't trust the colors on a computer screen.
