don..the scapes are prettier in person..a very pretty pale purple..the flash made them look white..a lot of the hostas had OBVIOUS damage..some looked so sad..they were shipped too early for THIS season..I hope that I rescued these in time..the ones still at the store will get another blast of cold Sat..but mine will be safe in my garage..

When I saw your pictures, I thought "wow" look how big your hostas are! But now I see they are your newly acquired hostas. Glad they went to a good home!

In Finland plant stores are just opening after long winter, I wish I can go soon shopping hostas. I haven't yet ordered any hostas online (I'm proud of myself), I want to first see which hostas survived.

All snow is gone and soil is almost free of ground frost. Some hostas have tiny pips, wow. Weather is 10 celsius in days, but nights are just above zero. I 've been cleaning hostas beds. Next 10 days are still same 10 C and cold nights, no snow in 10 days, jipii ;)

How cold is it supposed to be for you tomorrow? Were these hosta outdoors in an unsheltered location? And most of your hosta are 5 to 6 inches tall? Unfurled?

You'll love piecrust edges nicholsworth55! I bought a Spartacus last year. I'm mad at myself because I didn't record how many eyes it had nor take a picture. It's just beginning to grow. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Not sure if you did this, but it's a good idea to pull a new hosta out of its pot (before purchasing) to see the roots. I can forget to do this, but I try to remember.

stephanie..already had Krossa Regals (love them) but Spartacus and Praying Hands are new for me..was fun to see something new..

newhostalady..the new ones were outside in a covered area..but just steps from full exposure..some of my hostas are unfurled..I have pips of all sizes..Blue Angel's pips are 6" tall but not open..some Junes and Fire Islands are unfurled..will be freezing tomorrow night..tonight it's not freezing but I took everything out today and brought it back in tonight..the same plan for tomorrow..I've checked roots occasionally..I drive myself crazy checking stems and leaves to get "the best ones"..

nicholsworth, it is always good to see that I'm not the only plantaholic :-) Could have been me in that garden center...good luck with Spartacus, I got it last year and will check on it later. The week had been too busy to keep eyes on all of them. It looked good last year but came back small this spring. But you also got Krossa Regal (you can not have enough of them) and Praying Hands, a sun loving hosta, I have two in full sun. I can only order online, there is no nursery near me and those offered in gardencenters are only oldies (but goodies).

Normally I do not count pips, but this year I did with my Blue Angel, made me dizzy and finally I took a picture and put numbers on each pip, ended with 43 :-) I'm not made for pip counting...

I really hope that this spring is back to normal soon so that you all can enjoy your gardens...It has been sunny but cold all week long and the strong wind drives me crazy.

Karin..it was nice today..I worked hard to remove a boxwood stump..it was surrounded by Clausa hostas..I was careful and didn't damage any hostas..I'm a little worried about Spartacus..it's been a problem for some..I hope I can grow it..Krossa Regal is one of my favorites..I admit it I'm a plantaholic..there's quite a few of us lol..after Sat night's over we have some great days on the way..

Oh, I know about boxwood stumps...had to get rid of a monster a few years ago. My landlord lets everything grow and it was like a tree, took me 3 days to cut and dig out. Normally I try to keep every plant, but it already grew into the plum tree and was too dark and ugly at last...My two remaining boxwoods need a form cut, maybe I do this today before the surrounding hostas get too big. They grow like crazy now.

I have to work one more week then I can stay at home for 3 weeks of hopefully sunny gardening. Fitness, wellness and mental recreation just one step away:-)

Seems like you can plant your new ones soon, will you put Praying Hands all together in one spot?

Karin..after the stump was out I used a hand weeder and poked the dirt off the roots..it was laying there bare (top growth was removed) with intertwined roots and curved stems and I wondered "would Karin keep this and use it somewhere?"..it's not as weathered or shapely as the pieces you've brought home but I was thinking about it!..how wonderful to have 3 weeks of vacation..enjoy every minute and return to work rejuvenated!..my new plants are "homeless" lol..still deciding..I would like all of them together..or 2 groups of 3..or try one in a pot..would be easier if my plants were up..

My Menards had 2 buck hostas on Monday. Picked up Francee and Dream Queen. All sold out yesterday.

Good luck tonight. Hope it won't be as cold as the prediction. Our temperatures will be hovering around the freezing mark tonight too. My in ground hostas are just beginning to emerge so no problem there I think. I do have many pots that have awakened. Some will be in the garage, some in the greenhouse and a few will remain outdoors and covered. After this, hopefully the weather wlll be more cooperative!

Karin, regarding counting pips, I remember Jo explaining her method of counting pips. She uses a string to section off the pips. That's what I do now when there are many pips to count. It really helps!

Gardencool---Two dollars for hostas? It would have been difficult not to buy them all! Unheard of in my area.

newhostalady..put Krossa Regal on your wishlist..I LOVE them..Jo's method of counting pips is so clever..will be so happy when tonight is over..this almost breaks a low record..the record for this date is 31 and the forecast is 32..much rather have "normal" than record breaking..

I will put Krossa Regal on my wish list. I'm looking forward to nicer weather too. That's when we should really see a lot of growth on our plants.

I ordered a white Bleeding Heart today and a few sun loving Echinacea and bee friendly plants.

I'm pretty sure that I already mentioned that I love your garden. All those trees...but I also see that it is a tremedous work with all the leaves and other problems that come together with a woodland garden.

Perfect work with that stump! I would probably have shied away from that work and left it and occasionally cut down new life.

I made a facebook post about my Valley's (will post it here later) and mentioned that I had lost one of them and to my great surprise and joy I got a message from Jeroen that he is going to put one for free in my summer order. And I get a few older ones from another collector. That really made my day ;-)

Have you bought the begonia and violets for outside? I was just wondering when the weather will be good enough to put the rex begonias outside. Too cold at night but I might take them outside at least today to get them accustomed to daylight, better try with one of them first :-) Noticed one green little sprout at an EE bulb!

Talked to one of the neighbpurs about an overgrown little piece of land that is so covered in weeds and I can now use it to put some pots over there (directly behind my fence) to prevent more weeds growing over. Now I'm working at removing all those weeds...there is even some sort of bamboo growing there, very invasive and I hope I get all those roots out now...

Need to be quick before they all put their seeds in my garden again, will be my holiday project...unfortunately I can only use it temporarily until the plans for building that new house are finished. But it is going on for three years now and may take a while still...It's a very sunny place and I will use the bee plants there. For the first time I ordered in a nursery in Poland, they are much cheaper than in Germany and I hope that the quality is ok.

Karin..thanks for saying that you love my garden..I love your garden too..your plant variety is amazing..we both work hard and it's nice to hear when someone appreciates it..I love our setting but it IS messy..but the trees are worth the mess..that stump took 3 sessions..work awhile then switch to a different job..then more stump work..then a trip to the nursery..then finally I didn't quit until I pulled it out..since I'm retired I can waste time that working people can't lol..I want to be fast but I'm not wired that way :-) what a nice surprise to get a free plant!..I love pointing out my freebies when visitors come..it will be about 2 weeks(?) before the begonias and violets can go out to stay..won't plant my elephant ears until late May..hope the weeds on your "new land" come out without too much trouble..wouldn't it be great if someday you have a new neighbor that's a gardener?..I bet the plants coming from Poland will be fine..

I'm looking forward to retirement, then I can be in the garden all day long and that will slow down things a little. At the moment it is sometimes hard work, but that is no complaint, I love it as it is.

Do you put EE ears in the ground with a pot or without?

No hope for a gardening neighbour, it will not improve with that building project. Since the old people died who owned the house nobody really worked there. They gave it to a Christian community, but obviously they do not care for such humble things like gardens :-( All they do is coming together in the house 4 times a week and driving the neighbours crazy with all their singing. I could not help but tell the guy I talked to that it would be great to teach the kids how to be responsible for the things we have and maybe teach them to tend a strawberry bed for example...my grandson loves to grow his own things and consume them :-)

you'll love retirement..gardening is a great hobby..fresh air, exercise, never boring..I planted my EEs directly in the ground..this year in addition to the ground planting I might try some in pots on my deck..sorry you won't be getting a gardener for a neighbor :-( ..you're giving your grandson a great experience spending time in the garden with him..

we broke the record..went down to 30°..so far can't tell much difference..the damage will be more apparent when the leaves are bigger sigh..
