decorating a wall with vaulted ceiling

I need advice on how to properly decorate a wall that is approx 14 ft high x 13ft w. The height of the ceiling makes the couch seem so small. I would rather not replace the couch since it is in new condition. However this is my “formal” living room and the first thing you see when you enter the house. We are not formal people but this room is pitiful. Thoughts?

You have interesting things... have you tried the art and metal piece above the sofa? [prop it on it even]

Idk if this would work, but what about wallpaper framed? or fabric....

Moving the painting and iron scroll over the couch is my original plan -
I like the idea of frames fabric!
    Thank you!

Depending on what the mirrors reflect from the opposite side of the room, HomeSense and all all other stores similar to this sell tall mirrors at a very affordable price that come framed in tons of colors and textures that could be an option for your tall wall decor. :)

I rather like the unique way you hung the drapes. Look for a large piece of art that has texture and then sprinkle some of the color from the art in to your room.

mirrors would reflect the tv. I forgot to post that side of the room-I plan on getting some sort of tv cabinet but that would help brighten things up-thank you!

Ignore the height of the ceiling & decorate as you would any other room. Art would be nice, color.

Thank you jck910 for the advice- a lot to think about there- this may seem dumb but how do you assess the percentages? I know your supposed to do 3 but I struggle with over saturating and then it’s all the same- ex the carpet is beige, does that count in the color percentage? Do the chairs and carpet go in one color category? I feel like the couch stands out, or does it go as dark with the piano and coffee table? I think you’ve hit on one of the things I’m struggling with, getting it to blend without being bland - I don’t know how to work the percentage-

I think the pieces of art you have on the wall with the tv would look better over the sofa. :)

Large colorful art over the sofa. I tend toward simple classic lines so I don't care for the window wall drapery treatment and round thing. Wider lower media cabinet.

As one of the primary colors I would choose something like terracotta, for instance a rug with that color in it, and then some pillows featuring that color also. Right now your room is just too bland. I agree, take the round thing from the top of the window. I would have also chosen a glass and metal coffee table to lighten this area and to show the pretty carpet. Try to also have some warm colors in your art to give the room a more vibrant feeling. Declutter the piano and remove the ornament above the painting. Try the painting over the couch. Add smaller paintings on each side if it's not large enough. Try the two vertical paintings over the piano, although they also look good over the couch.

Lovely room. A cool blue canvas could be a good addition.

I have traded out that floor lamp that is too yellow and a bit bulky for your room.

    • 60% of a room is comprised of wall space and large anchor pieces
    • 30% of a room is accent furniture, area rugs, wood trim, textiles, etc.
    • 10% is variety via decor, artwork and smaller items

And here's what it equates to with regards to color:

    • 60% of a room's color is achieved through a dominant wall color—either paint or wallpaper, as well as flooring or large rugs, and large-scale furniture (this should be the main color you want to build your palette from)
    • 30% of color will come from furniture, textiles, lighting, etc. (the key here is to vary the tones of this accent color to keep the room interesting)
    • 10% is the place to play around with a variety of color families, patterns, and textures (i.e., mixing metallics and wood). Keep in mind that 10% is not a hard-and-fast rule, but rather the idea that a few bold choices can go a long way to adding depth and sparkle to a room, but you don't need to do more (unless, of course, you want to!).

Once you start thinking in this way, have fun playing around with these ratios! Here are some examples in action to give you an idea of how this rule works.
