I am just another Houzz customer; however, I feel compelled to offer my opinion. The major feature & cost of this cabinet is the beautifully bookmarked elm veneer on the curved cabinet doors; this is the feature for which you are paying. The perceived depth and, therefore beauty of the bookmarked doors, would only be perceived with a darker stain, such as shown.

Please don’t waste your money buying this cabinet, only to re-stain or paint it. You could easily find a cabinetmaker in your area whom would gladly build a similar cabinet & stain it grey. If you enjoy crafts or would like to test how a lighter stain, i.e. driftwood, you can buy veneer in all wood types, sizes & shapes. One may think of veneer as “wood contact paper”, as it is typically very thin (1.0-2.0mm) but you apply the glue. You can buy it at many stores, but it can be considered pricey, esp. if it is ‘bookmarked veneer’.

I just realized your post was over a year ago, please let me know if you found a cabinet & send a picture. I am a Professor, not a Professional Designer, whom also thought this piece is lovely.
