Nahema pruning question!!!

I have a Nahema that is going on 3 years old. She is not growing like I think she should. She appears healthy, but just slow. She was a two cane wonder when I planted her. She then threw up a new cane. The two canes grew longer and I have them tied off on my fence. The 3rd cane is free standing. (only about 3 feet tall) My question is, should I cut the two long canes back? Leave her and see what happens?

I don’t have Nahema but I do have several other climbing roses and my experience is that it takes 3-4 years for climbing roses to hit their stride and really start blooming well, so just be patient, I know it’s hard lol. Pink rose you have the right idea about pruning your laterals too. From what I have read on this forum is that climbers spend a lot of energy growing to the size they need to be and all that energy for growing means less blooms but once they get established and mature then you will see more blooms. I’m not an expert and hopefully others will chime in and give better advice.

Pink rose, mine is not bushy. Just canes with a few leaves. The upright has a bud on it. The 2 on the fence, are just now showing red growth. You are so right about the length of the laterals.

Boncrow, She is in full sun and I have fertilized her. I may move her...frustrated because the scent is heaven. Can either of you recommend a moderate climber with fragrance. It is along the walkway to my back door on a 4 ft high chain link fence.

My Nahema’s are fast growing and young, so this may or may not be helpful. I hard pruned and defoliated mine in January.

I cut all the laterals to just an inch or two during that time.

Here it is now (there are other roses intermingling with it too... of course it’s the light pink one)

Whenever it blooms I cut the long stems (the laterals) to way less than a foot, more like a few inches, and use the blooms as long stemmed roses indoors.

It works great here so far, but like I said mine is younger, fast growing and blooms often so maybe this isn’t helpful?

Your Nahema looks great .maybe mine doesn't bloom much because l leave the laterals long .l will cut the roses as long stemed from now on to see what happens.

How about fertilizing your Nahema every 2 weeks ? Maybe that will help her along .

I don’t know that I would move her yet, climbers tend to be heavy feeders so give her some goodies and see how she does for you. Don’t give up on her yet. Cori Ann yours is gorgeous! I think you must have magic in your dirt/soil lol. Everything you grow is crazy health and huge!

Pink, I will hit her with the fertilizer again. There are times during the day when she is lightly shaded, but she also gets reflected light and heat from the white drive and light brick. She gets plenty of water. She did have a touch of blackspot, but all my roses did this year. It's like she is just "holding" her size right now and what growth does come is slow...You know how it is...you just have this vision in your head of how wonderful that spot will look....then, it doesn't...I may just be rushing things. Do you think that it doesn't like our humid area?

Cori Ann, how young is yours? I have a couple that I rooted. One I planted last year. It is covered with old leaves, that are still green. It has two blooms on top of a 4 ft one cane. The just don't appear very vigorous. It is also one that I got from Chamblees. (Sharifa is another) They seem to take forever to get going....

I keep hearing the same thing about Chamblees roses on this forum. Very slow to get going. I have 3 Nahemas and all of mine are grafted on multiflora (which does well here) from Palatine, so that will definitely be a factor. They have been here about a year and a half. Lots and lots of basal breaks, lots of blooms, very fast, vigorous growth.

All of my roses from Chamblees have been great roses and grow very well for me however I do think some roses are more vigorous grafted vs own root. I used to beat myself up when I would see pics of roses that were the same age as mine yet were these huge roses covered in blooms until I realized they were grafted and were probably more vigorous due to the grafting. Just remember that not all roses grow the same for everyone due to different climates, I would be patient, it sounds like your Nahema is putting on new growth and I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts growing like crazy for you soon. I will also add that all my DA roses came from Chamblees and some took off straight away while others have taken longer to put on some growth and from what I have read and been told by some forum members that certain Austin’s take longer own root vs grafted. So I think it just depends on the rose. My own root Heritage took off the first year and had been huge and covered in blooms but my own root Tamora was a runt for 3 years and now this year being its 4th year it has suddenly burst into growth and is gorgeous.

My Nahema is ownroot from Cool Roses . It is very vigorous and gets morning sun only , she is my only climber (I got Florentina & Quicksilver last month ) . I was expecting her to bloom like Eden . I usually fertilize with Espoma tones but heard that Vigoro's fertilizers are good so may try them in future .

Well, if everyone wouldn’t post their amazing photos, I wouldn’t be so impatient!! . I’ll leave her and give her more fertilizer and keep her watered! My plants from Chamblees have been slow. In great health, but just slow. I guess it’s because most of the bands I get from them are tiny. Oh well, patience is not my virtue! I will look at quicksilver and Floritina!
