some of my hostas have looked like that when they were growing buried under debris..I would find them as I was carefully cleaning up..this takes forever so I'm never really finished lol..so I usually find some like this..but once they're uncovered they green up and grow and are just fine..I don't know what you have there but it could be a hosta..there is a tag sticking in the soil but I can't read it..plant it soon..let us know what happens as it grows..

Thank You, Nicolsworth 55, the roots were of hosta Split Milk (I failed to buy it with my usual orders).

I see this quite a lot in Garden Centers here in the UK

They are bare rooted crowns packed in dry peat in a plastic bag with a cardboard cover complete with picture of a huge mature plant.

Sold from autumn onwards they hang on racks inside the centre, normally some sort of glasshouse structure.

Come the spring things warm up and they start to sprout.

Caught early enough and potted up, following Ken's advice they soon look normal.

I wonder how many of these unsold packets end up in bins each year!

I don't know which one it is but it IS a hosta and it's growing!

I'm so terrible at guessing ID. I thought they were bean sprouts....so glad it turned out to be a hosta!
