@noor,
there are no set rules about where to place lights or how a room should be lit.
this is the perfect question to pose to any lighting professional (along with your house plans) for a design consultation. I and many other pros on houzz are able to provide online design services if you’d like. your specific house design and your individual needs & wants, along with your sense of style will all impact lighting fixture selection and placement.
good luck!

Congratulations on your new endeavor!

Lighting can be tricky. The preferred locations and amount of lights is dependent on each space, its function, and its user. In most private residences, kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces typically require a sufficient amount of task lighting while bedrooms, dining, and other entertaining spaces rely on soft ambient lighting.

From a sustainability standpoint, building orientation and space planning based on the most effective use of daylight in the majority of your spaces is the best place to start with lighting design and the electrical plan. In addition, natural light is the least demanding light for our eyes and mind to operate under, so there is a function factor to keep in mind there as well.

Another element to consider outside of light fixture selection and allocation is the amount of reflective surfaces within a given space. Consulting with a trained lighting professional, an interior designer, and an electrician would be recommended in developing an efficient and effective electrical plan. They should be able to calculate the proper amount of lumens needed per space based on daylighting, reflectance values, and the dimensions of each space. Feel encouraged to communicate how you plan to use every room in your home and any personal preferences when it comes to types of light- daylight, artificial light, warm light, cool light, etc...- to ensure lighting needs and expectations are met.

Best of luck with your project!
