Do passion vines grow in your area?

Yes they do, I have them in my zone 8b and this one appears to be Passiflora incarnata, also known as Maypop. The deer love them if that matters to you.

If that's a maypop, it's a native vine that hosts fritillaria (sp) caterpillars and I think zebra longwings. It produces a fruit and beautiful flowers. Here in Florida it gets quite large and will pop up all over once it's established.

Oh, good. I checked about Passiflora species and although they are not listed as native in my county, there are listed in other places in Texas. Also I read about the glands on the leaf stem (extrafloral nectaries). Here are close-up photos!

I'll keep them there. We don't mind sharing the nectar, flowers, and fruits with wildlife.

As mentioned above, they tend to pop up everywhere from the rhizomes. I grew one once, and in year two there were 10 new plants coming up within a 5 foot radius of the original. Years 3-6 were spent killing them all.

Update on this plant. It has multiple flower buds now. There are nectaries on the bracts.

June 14 update. The very first flower opened.

In addition to removing sprouts in unwanted spots, you might want to deadhead after bloom so you don’t have seeds as well.

Sing it, weedwoman!!!! Here in zone 4b, I'm lucky if the plants I work really hard to keep alive look like that!!!

That's not the pure, native Maypop (Passiflora incarnata). That is a non-native hybrid, probably Passiflora 'Incense' or 'Inspiration'. The true Maypop only has 3-lobed leaves, its flowers are much paler, its petiole glands will generally be right up against the bases of the leaves, and it will bear yellowish/light-green, egg-shaped fruit. Your hybrid will probably never bear fruit, or only very rarely...
