Agreed - a softer brush. Our guy has issues with the opposite end - his very sensitive (and sexy) butt and tail. Especially the tip of his tail surrounded by tons of hair. Our dog is also white....

Here's an Amazon link to the one I use. I've tried it on my head, and it isn't painful at all. I also use it to shampoo him. (He's itchy and loves that.) I'm not sure if it would be stiff enough to go through your dog's hair though. I wonder if you need to brush his face every night, maybe just touch up the eyes. Maybe give a treat after face grooming.
