Asparagus spindly

I planted crowns 3 years ago. Last year they got hit with disease and grew short weird bonsai looking trees in the middle of summer. Some here thought they might not make it. They did and fall branches looked better.

Currently almost all shoots coming up (first shoots of the year) are spindly with the largest being the size of a pencil. Should I harvest? I REALLY want some and do not mind it slowing growth but I am debating it since I always here stop harvesting when shoots get smaller then the size of a pencil.
