Depending on the style of your house, a pretty quilt draped over the banister would look very nice, imo.

Maybe a small trunk to hold some extra linens, but like saypoint said, it doesn't need it. I think a nice rug would protect the floors and add some interest and softness.

I would note that since we have kids, I'd never put anything like a trunk or any furniture next to a banister like that. It's just asking for trouble.

If a quilt isn’t your style, you could prolly find an “ethnic” blanket or yard goods to tie to the top rail.

OR, paint the spindles an interesting color??

I'd put a runner or rug in the space, whichever fits. I wouldn't decorate the railing. No need.

Good suggestions above, especially for a colorful runner, but in addition I hope you don't mind my mentioning that the huge clock is very much a trend that has come and gone. Also, the picture arrangement on the right needs to be restyled. Everything is too close to the central picture, and the frame of the central one is too different from all the other ones. Please forgive the unasked-for advice, but I love decorating and it's meant to be helpful, and not to hurt your feelings in any way.

@Remodeling1840 its a large family room. Ingrid, you did not hurt my feelings. I am open to all suggestions. I will try to figure out how to restyle the pictures. The large one in the middle is actually a family tree and I may move it elsewhere. The frames are all a little different but I was hoping to make them work.

And I hope you don’t mind me saying if YOU like the clock, keep it and enjoy it! The shifts in trends only matter if you are trying to keep up with the Jones, or their decorator!

The clock over our fireplace isn’t quite as big, but I can check the time even from a distance and it suits us. (I tried to replace it w something colorful/pretty and could barely function— I’d come to depend on looking at the fp to check the time!)
