Today 5/5/18

I just thought I’d post a few pictures of what things are looking like today. Today was warm, too warm for me. The temperature was about 90F, and the humidity at 23% with some wind. I was bitten by mosquitoes for the first time this year, last evening as I sat on the patio. Things are heating up, and we only received a third of our “normal” rainfall this year. Lisa

‘Baronne Prevost’ has been blooming nicely for the past several weeks, and is still producing new clusters of buds. I think I’m going to prune back that naked cane, unless someone can why tell me it should stay. I gave her pretty hard pruning in January because we needed access to the area. That particular cane wasn’t in the way, so I left it longer than the others. It hasn’t even grown a single new leaf! I didn’t expect that on a young plant. (3 years old, tops.) It’s painfully obvious which leaves are from last year, and what is new foliage. I did remove that leaflet, after taking the picture.

When I decided to take pictures, the evening light was perfect. I’m such a slow poke, that’s no longer so. I won’t post as many as I originally intended to, but I’ll add more tomorrow. I like having pictures/posts like these to look back on, so I can compare bloom dates, quantity of bloom, and temperatures.

‘Flamingo Gardens Tea’ finally has its clematis partner opening up. The wanning light makes clematis ‘Mdm Julia Correvon’ appear far more true red, than I like in this picture. She’s really a wine colored clematis.

It was getting pretty dark out, but I stubbornly carried on. ‘Hommage a Soupert et Notting’ is blooming for the first time here. It’s such a pretty rose, and I’m surprised it’s blooming as much as it is, after being cut back so much for transport from Cliff’s.

‘White Pet’ is really blooming and budding. It’s actually easier to see all the buds in this darkness:)

‘Alnwick Rose ‘ ought to wait until this “mini heatwave” ends, before opening too many blooms. They’re lovely, but so fleeting in the heat.

So dark out, I’m being borderline ridiculous, but this is the last one I’ll post of this evenings pictures. ‘Mme Alfred Carriere’ is draping her lovely self over the fence. There are SO many young buds on the other side(front yard), it’s going to be a wonderful sight!

I’ll take more pictures tomorrow, when there’s enough light! Lisa:)

What beauties Lisa! I’ve seen Homage a Soupert et Notting on the Ducher website, and drooled. What a stunner that rose is! Everything is looking lovely, and the Madame is stunning in the twilight draped over that fence!

How old is your Homage a Soupert et Notting? How long did you have to wait for a bloom?

Thank you! Cedemas, I was fortunate to receive a mature specimen of ‘Homage a Soupert et Notting’ from Cliff who used to own Eurodesert nursery. We cut it back and brought it over in late January. This one was already well established, we just had to cut it back so much to get it home. I’m loving it so far.

Here’s some better pictures this morning.

MAC, this morning in better light. Thanks, Karen. I adore her!

My superstar, Louise Odier continues to please.

I have never seen so many buds on ‘Gruss an Aachen’, before.

My ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison’ is growing a bit, and has buds. I think I have figured out the problem. I knew one rose in that row against the park was being hit slightly with weed killer, but didn’t realize they were ALL being affected to various degrees. No that they’ve truly stopped spraying, EVERYTHING is doing better in that area.

    Abe Darby peeking out.

    Alnwick Castle in better light.

Tiny Miss Alice in her tiny gopher cage, with tiny buds.

Out front, Golden Buddha has been blooming nonstop for many months. Cream Veranda is in the basket over Golden Buddha. Lisa

Oops, Houzz says too many pictures. Here’s the Golden Buddha picture.

Lisa, you have so many different interesting roses. I'm so glad your problem with SdlM has been rectified. I have a feeling it will really take off this year. Miss Alice is adorable.

Gorgeous! I can't wait for mine to look like that. But mine is still an infant.

I love that you took photos in the dark Lisa. I just went out to check a newbie with a flashlight. We're all so nuts in the best way possible.

Lisa, everything is so beautiful! I oogle everyone's garden to see the plant combinations. We hit 90 this weekend also and I was swatting the biters. I am not going to complain...anything to get my roses growing. Prosperity has been blooming her head off. Just love it!

Gorgeous blooms, I like the clematis with Alnwick. It's one of my favorite Austins, love the fragrance.

I grow Miss Alice, quite charming and in my zone it is quite compact and makes for a nice bedding rose companion with Hybrid Teas.

Thanks all! I do love Alnwick’s globes, but they blow SO quickly! Yet, everyone is drawn to its blooms, so it stays. Luckily, it also stays small for me. Miss Alice is indeed tiny. She is new, so her companion plants nearest are lisianthus. They will only last the spring and early summer, so she will have more space if she needs it. I’ve learned to not quite trust any DA sizes. lol It’s gotten warm here fast, and I’m still trying to get my companion plants in the ground. I’m very slow with everything. I need to learn that saving $ on shipping isn’t really saving, if I can’t plant them all fast enough! I’m better off just ordering what I can manage to plant in a few days or a weeks time. I do tell myself it’s not entirely my fault, as my drip system has been only half installed and Javier again nowhere to be found.

Prosperity is such a pretty one, galgal! I have Pink Prosperity, but still in a barrel. My Hybrid Musks haven’t bloomed yet, and Pink Prosperity wants out, before she does! Bubble Bath and Felicia are on their way, though. I checked on my Crepuscule. It was swamped by CA poppies and Mel’s Heritage. It’s got sweet little blooms! How’s yours doing?

We really are nuts out in the dark! I’m glad that I’m still interested enough after many years of gardening to do such crazy things. Lisa

(Pssssssttttt... Lisa. Guess what came back into stock today at Heirloom, which I promptly ordered... someday we will be able to compare notes on The lovely Louise!)

Karen, how exciting! I love that your getting Louise Odier! She’s turned out to be such a great rose! I never expected to love her so much, or for her to bloom so much for me.

Thanks, Jin! I’m no fan of heat, so all of a sudden I’m taking a nap in the afternoon and going out into the yard around 5pm. By the time I really get going, it’s getting dark. That’s life. I was getting spoiled with our nice cool, spring weather. It’s back to vampire hours, again! Lisa
