Lavender Crush

I got Lavender Crush last year from Walmart for $10. It grew about 5ft tall. Some of the blooms got defected due to the latest winter spells. But the fragrance is so powerful and lovely. I mostly grow fragrant roses. I have to say this rose is one of the top. I am in love.

I just bought a body bag of LC at Walmart last week. I'm not sure it is actually LC. Your leaves look glossy and mine are matte and more pointy. I have to decide soon where to put it but I am reluctant to dig up Zepherine Drouhin as she finally popped two new shoots from near the base. Didn't think she survived along with the many others. If it actually is LC, that rose doesn't seem to be something that would want to spend the summer in a pot no matter how big it would be.

Bent, your LC is beautiful. I hope mine will be as pretty as your next flush.

Lkayetwv, I have the feeling this rose will be big. Hope you get the right one.

I had a mislabeled rose, thought it was a cross between LC and Violet's pride. Still not sure. After seeing Bent's pics, looks like it could be LC. Violet shade changes from bud to full flower, very pleasing fragrant.

I love Violet’s Pride. But LC’s fragrance is better. I think yours is LC. Hope you like it.

How’s this one doing for everyone? Is it worth going back to the store and getting another?

For 6$.. is it really worth passing by ? That’s coffee and a donut . lol

this is how I justify everything. I listen to my husbands sports betting talk , and make a tally and match that . Fairs fair! ;)

The photos of this look so pretty!

I found an obviously mislabeled AngelFace with no bloom but the leaves and prickles were all wrong. It was a peat pot for 7 or 8 dollars so I took a chance. It bloomed and it's definitely not Angel face but it's not Lavender Crush either. I have a couple of thoughts on who it is, but I'm not sure. The flower is huge.

lol lilyfinch, what if plants and college sports are on equal footing?

I am in 6 March Madness groups ha

That kind of talk is how I end up with 20 body bags after I have online orders for 30 roses.

Well jc .. I hope your wife has an exciting hobby too ! Lol I can’t imagine if he was into his sports and plants . We used to have a pond in Pa that he built, and a salt water aquarium and goodness those were expensive hobbies! He has a go big or go home mentality, and he is generous with his spending when it comes to a hobby.

It is so easy to order roses all winter and then go bananas in a garden center come spring while you wait for your orders to come in . And those bare roots are so cheap .. I mstruggling to stay out of garden centers right now ! I can’t handle it. I was halfway in Home Depot parking lot when I had to force myself to leave . I knew I’d sneak another onto the moving pile and give myself more work ! Not that you need it but hewitts in Franklin has all theirs in , from weeks and David Austin. :)

sultry i I got one too this early spring and it is very vigorous! Really can’t wait to see it in person .

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) you grow (or grew?) both Quicksilver and Lavender Crush, no? Did they perform about the same (blooming power)?

    Robert

I only grow Lavender Crush, it blooms and repeats quite well for a climber, but due to the coloring and small individual blooms, it doesn’t have the same mass impact as say an Eden (but again, much better repeat). Lavender Crush is extraordinarily fragrant, and Quicksilver only moderately so.

I grow Quicksilver in Southern California. For me, it has absolutely zero fragrance (though I’m forever hopeful this might change, given the reports of moderate fragrance?), shuts down in the summer, and does not repeat quickly. Mine is an own root plant entering it’s fourth year; it may do better in more German-like climates or at the hands of more talented and experienced gardeners. On the plus side, it’s very pretty in the spring and fall, has big, petal-packed flowers that last forever on the bush almost like silk flowers, is a mannerly climber that doesn’t exceeded it’s stated size, and is a very color stable true lavender (doesn’t fade or pink out ever).

DesertRose - oh, it's very beautiful! You've done a good job on espaliering the canes! Looks sooooo lovely, especially against the white structure.

I love your white arched trellis! LC looks pretty happy there ♡

Thanks, Rosecanadian and Sultry! Quicksilver is a nice rose. I really want to grow Lavender Crush, too, but I can’t quite figure out a spot where I can let it get big and horizontal and glorious like Ben’s.

Desert Rose, Oh I didn't read that right I thought you had LC planted there instead of Quicksilver lol. I must need my eyes checked 😅

I agree QS is a good rose. Always blooming here. I have 2 grafted QS and 2 own roots. The grafted ones bloomed wel the first year. The 2 own roots took a few years before they bloomed a lot, regularly. It was sporadic at first.

Here Lav Crush has a nice citrusy fragrance. Quick Silver barely has any fragrance. LC gets more black spot that QS during our hot rainy summer season. They are both good roses. The LC is much more purple with a pale reverse on the petals. QS is more Lavender.

Sultry: Do your grafted Quicksilvers still outperform your own roots? My own root QS definitely did better in its 3rd year (last year) than previously, but I wouldn’t say it exactly “leaped.” Also, I’m curious if your Lavender Crush is a lot bigger than your QSs, or if they’re similar sized plants.

After the 3rd year, the Own root performs about the same as the grafted QS. I am in a nematode prone area so not sure what will happen long term. My LC is grafted and the grafted QS got bigger than the LC quicker. The QS are older though. I kept all my climbers in check somewhat the last few yrs. in anticipation of moving. They will both get huge in a warm climate. I would give LC a big space.

Thanks @sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)! I had Quicksilver already and *accidentally* (cough, cough) bought a Lavender Crush from the nursery a few days ago. It’s a large specimen too. Now I have two lavender climbers and don’t know where they will go. 😁

I got disappointed by its flower getting crisp under the California sunshine and I was cruelly trying to get rid of her and then I found out she sprouted two new leads and hundreds of buds… I dropped my knife and kneeled on the ground…. Now I have to keep her!!! Here are some photos of spring bloom from last year.

@Hongyu Li, beautiful, beautiful Lavender Crush. I had the same thought that my LC blooms feel dryish and crisp but it got improved as temperature dropped in fall.

    So beautiful...very worthwhile it seems. :) :)

My Lavander Crush is 4-5 years old. It arrived as a very small band,,but grew to 6’ its first year. It can grow taller, but I want to be able to see the blooms without a step stool so I keep it at 61/2 ft. The canes are not flexible, but the flowers are subtle and exquisite, and their scent is intense - early in the am, before it gets too hot . LC doesn’t bloom much during the heat, but does produce a nice fall flush.
Houzz is not letting me see all my photos .. grr.

    Oh my!! That's a vigorous grower!! Intense scent...mmmmm :)

I planted it in a very big plastic pot since the beginning and only added organic manure, some topping soil and water solutions later this spring. It has been growing vigorously since Jan. Two super thick leads growing from the bottom darting to the sky! Oh my dear, it must overhead the gossip that I wanted to send it away… the foliage this year is huge and healthy. It’s almost like wild rose. Each unit of the leaves is as long as my arms. I trained it to the trellis and it can get great amount of afternoon sunlight but not much in the morning. There are about 50 buds going to bloom soon. Some of the strong canes from this year bear 15 buds. God! The fragrance is probably the most delicious fragrance I’ve smelled. Almost as strong as Perfume Factory rose. Last year it was intense but smelt chemical (dish soap), and I wasn’t a big fun of it. But this year it smells really fruity and organic. I love the fragrance. Truly!

    Ok, cons:

    1. it can’t take heat. The flower at most lasts two days then fades and wilts.
    2. It doesn’t like too much water solutions. Be very very careful, especially if you plant it in a pot. The leaves burn quickly when I water it with too much water solutions, and I think it prefers being starved to well-fed.
    3. The old canes are not as vigorous as the new shoots. A lot of blind shoots occurred in Spring, and I learned that I had to prune it harder.
    4. The canes are very hard and almost impossible to train those spiky thick canes to an arbor. So I think the best usage of Lavender Crush is to let it take over a wide tall fence or wall.
    5. Give to where I live, 9B SoCal, has the best sunshine in the world, I might just move it to somewhere has the most gentle morning sunlight so I can appreciate its bloom longer.

Conclusion: the disease resistance is exceptional. Growing habit is vigorous and it blooms with flushes. Hard to bend and tend to grow tall. Flowers have the most delicious fragrance but are not heat resistant. The best solution is to find a high wall facing morning sunlight for her to climb and prune it harder every spring.

Great info! Sounds like a winner!

Just wanna share this beautiful morning. My lavender crush has bloomed a month officially. The fragrance never fails to amaze me!

What a great rose for you! The first picture really showcases this rose...I wish I could smell the fragrance. :)

A few weeks ago I went to Home Depot. I saw a 3 gallon potted rose in bloom with unusual colors which reminded me of Lavender Crush. I sniffed the blooms and sure enough I said to myself this has to be Lavender Crush! STRONG yummy lemon scent. But it had no label. The container had only the words, "My Climbing" on it. I figured it must be Lavender Crush so I purchased it and later google searched for "My Climbing" and found Lavender Crush rose in the same container online at Home Depot's website removing all doubt. It is currently available on Home Depot's website. It's priced at $50 including delivery which is $20 more than I paid in person. I'm excited to see this rose grow. The photos here are stunning and the fragrance is amazing! 🤩

You won’t regret it. Here’s a bloom cluster from today. The fragrance is sublime.
