Planting out a Pachypodium.

After years in a pot..I decided to plant and not pot up. Its the second one I have..although the other Pachypodium lamerei has thinner leafs ( but its not P.gaeyi) and this one has Plumeria like leaves. The older in ground plant is about 16 years old now, 13 in ground from a 8" high plant.

Nothing special to report other then the Pachy's root system is fine..no large or thick roots. Sponge like.

This one was nipped back by the wet winter and cold December of 2 years ago. It lost about 10" off the top and for awhile I thought the whole plant was going to die on me.

I hope its all good now.

That's it. I hand water everything and a potted plant ranch gets to be too much by mid summer. If I can find a spot in ground that is right..enough,it goes in.

A few tropical things that hate cold wet roots will always be potted.

It looks nice in it's new spot. I agree about the pain of watering plants in pots. Pachys take on another interest level when they branch IMO, like the one you have that has been in the ground longer.

I had a P. geayi that I kept putting off repotting. The dang thing was vicious, and the usual newspaper wrap recommendations weren't sufficient. (It didn't help that I seemed to have a reaction to the pokes.) There really wasn't a place in the garden where I would not smack into it while doing pruning and maintenance, so I eventually gave it to my next-door neighbor rather than have to deal with it.

Still think they are cool plants, though. Hope yours thrives in the ground.
