Quince tree or shrub

I live in zone 5 and am contemplating planting a quince. I use to work in an office with a view of one of the shrubs out my window. It was the one with the orange flowers. I never noticed any fruit on it, although it may have had some. It was gorgeous in bloom although had some thorns. I see they are breeding them thornless. Not sure if the shrub would be worth it for the fruit. The tree variety I am totally not familiar with. Have never even tasted the fruit. I'd really rather have the shrub unless it is a waste of time for getting anything edible. Anyone grow it? I'm thinking of it for a spot next to my mailbox, between the road and a big norway spruce outside my house. Gets some runoff occasionally when we have a big big rain. Southern exposure.
