Thank you for both replies. The house was built in 1990 and I got it in 2012 so it is at least 6+ years old. I am very motivated to wipe out everything and start fresh. I will read the site you linked as well.

would you consider extending the bed a bit... instead of jamming too much plant material.. too close to the house ... creating maintenance issues over the years .... keep in mind.. foundation plantings are planted to hide the foundation ... NOT ON THE FOUNDATION ....

its a common error.. peeps planting new small plants too close.. with no real understanding of future potential ... i use google images with the latin names of plants ... to get an idea of future potential ... so i can better site plants for the long run ....

Personally, I would begin with a new bed line. The existing one is far too wiggly. And then don't engulf the house with plants.

I too was going to suggest changing the border edge to a single sweep. Use a flexible hose to play around with various possibilities. I would rather not see the edging itself and certainly not the red mulch. All of the shrubs should be anchored in a groundcover, preferably evergreen. You may not need to replace all the shrubs. They may be containable and more attractive if not sheared. The only shrubs thst are attractive when sheared are those expertly done. Ie oerfect geometry. I can count on one hand the times I’ve seen that in this country..
