Please help my cherry tree

Hi,
I live in California and purchased a cherry
tree that is about 5 ft tall from a nursery and planted in my back yard. The tree was transplanted to a pot last fall. It is in a 15 GAL pot with an organic potting mix for soil. I noticed the leaves are not on the branches, but they are showing up on the bottom of the trunk. Any help is appreciated!
