Does this countertop work?

I saw a slab of granite today (last pic) that I'd love to use in our new kitchen but would like to hear what others think... is it too busy? Can I get away with it? Cabinets will be ivory Shaker (cabinet colour is on paint chip held next to the granite). Backsplash (not picked yet) will be plain ivory of some sort. The walls that don't have cabinets will be a soft green, handles will probably be matte gold, and floor is the brown tile below.

Thinking of doing the trim in the same colour as the cabinets (BM Ivory White) in semi-gloss, and the ceiling in flat... would that be okay, or is ivory too heavy for the ceiling? Thanks so much!

That looks striking to me- artistic, not busy. I love it and think it will great lovely with your choices.

I don't know much about specific paint choices for the ceiling. I am sure someone knowledgeable will be here soon to help with that question.

    Your parquet is stunning too.

ETA I like the paint color you chose very much. I think it works well with the stone.

Beautiful granite, no wonder you fell in love with it. Where is it going, on the outer counter and island. I think it blends with the color of floor and cabinets, but the green walls I don't think will look good. Take a light color from the granite for walls.

You had better discuss your layout and seams with a fabricator.

I think it's beautiful! Your kitchen layout will help to see if you are OK with the large scale design the stone has. Your average straight run counters are a little wider than 2 FT; will you like the stone if it looks very different in sections? Does your space have an island? It would look awesome there for sure.

Wow, it's a work of art! What is the name of this granite?

It depends how much of the countertop surface you will cover with this granite - how big your kitchen is and are you covering all countertops and island with it. If you have an island, I would put this granite on it and go with something simpler on other countertop surfaces. That way, this granite will be the real star of the kitchen.

I really like that Granite. I think it will work well with your floor and cabinet.

    I like it!

It is gorgeous but I see it as the top of a large island, cut up for countertops will destroy its beauty. And I wouldn't choose wall color until it's installed.

Also that floor is too busy for the granite. All those geometric shapes are distracting.

i'm another person who fears this granite will be trivialized once its cut into slices for perimeter counters. have the fabricator show exactly how it will be cut... take a picture, print it out, lay it out like a jigsaw puzzle.... see how it would really look in your kitchen.

i think this slab is a showstopper, perfect for an island with no cut out, or if the cutout can happen in a boring spot.... go with a solid something else for the perimeters.

I love your granite choice, and think it will go well with your other choices. I want to emphasize what Jan Moyer said, and expand on it a little. You must go to the template layout at the fabricator's. Do not skip this step. Do not say the fabricator will know where to do the cuts without your input. Do not let the fabricator say he doesn't need you there. In fact, if the fabricator says he doesn't need you there, find another fabricator. This stone and its patterns and its directions will really need your input on where the sink cutout is, where the seams will go, etc.

ETA: Ninigret and I posted at the same time. That's a good idea, but the only issue with 2 counter materials is whether your kitchen is large enough to carry that off.

Wow!!! What a beautiful piece of stone. I hope you take the advice of the experts re cutting and placement because this could be a real work of art if done properly. I also would wait to choose a paint colour for the walls, but I would paint the ceiling a 'whiter' white.

M Miller, i think if the kitchen isnt large enough to carry off two counter colors (one being a solid) then its not large enough to carry off this granite, either. the granite would be reduced to 'bits of busy' around the edges of the kitchen.

adding, if it was cut into pieces, i'd be a little concerned that the individual pieces would look like the fabricator was having a sale on remnants... as its hard to believe all of those different patterns came out of the ground attached to each other!

This stone needs a big island. If you stick with stone minimize all other distractions. Paint walls to match cabinet color and ceiling same color as walls. Bone for backsplash. Do you have good size island?

No big island, unfortunately, or any island at all for that matter. (I have a breakfast nook that will have a solid wood table.) I am keenly aware that an island would be the best place to show it off, and was concerned about how it would look on a narrower counter. I will certainly be taking your advice about being involved in lay out seriously.

@Home Art Tile - This is Patagonia.

Let me know if anyone knows of any other ivory toned granite that looks similar, but is a bit more uniform.

ah well, pay attention to suggested layouts, make sure the best parts wont be cut out for sinks or be under your kitchen aid mixer. its a great find. best of luck!

I think it will look great, but I would go with a lighter green. Maybe that same color at 50%.

Omg, best stone I've ever seen for a kitchen. Buy it!

It is a beautiful piece but as you are going to use it on counters and not an island, I would find it too busy. Anything you set on the counter will compete and most people do set things on the counter. An island, not so much.

I absolutely love it! Here are a few Patagonia pics with great pattern continuation.

Skip this stone? Please? It needs a big showy spot to show it off. You don't have it. :) To be honest it needs a 200 k kitchen . There are many beautiful stones.

Boo hoo, I really liked that slab! I absolutely get where you're coming from though...

These caught my eye today... would any work? The middle two (and possibly the first) are a leather finish. Don't think the last one will work as much as I like it. Some of these are beautiful works of art in and of themselves... wish they could just be inserted into the kitchen and look as lovely.

i like 1 and 3 the best from those. and yes, that 1st one is also leathered. Is that Black Horse? 3rd one looks like leathered Fusion quartzite

Beth H - just checked, it's titanium leather Those two are my husband's favourites too. A black counter top is a bit of a new idea for me though... always thought I wanted ivory on ivory.

The second one looks rather mundane, but is lovely to the touch...

Titanium,,,that's right. I like that one. the leathering keeps the fingerprints and oily smudges at bay.

Beth H that looks rather beautiful.

it is...it's very nice. ask if they have a polished slab so you can see the difference

I like this black sink w/it and matte black faucet/hardware.

    and bring in black/gold lighting

Notice how unique, one-of -a-kind, bold pieces these are?
Notice how there are shades of paint in every conceivable colour?

Don't choose the paint and then try to work the stone around it. It will always be imperfect that way. Choose the stone, don't focus on the "chosen" paints.

I take it you've decided against the first?
Could you share pictures or a sketch of the layout of your kitchen, so we can understand what you're working with?

@ Najeebah - I haven't totally ruled out the first one if there's any way I can make it work in this space (pics below) - I'm just aware that it may not show as well unless I get lucky with the slab/ cuts...

There are just three places that need counter top. (Aware the layout isn't conventional, but it works for us and is not changing at this point! :) ) Pic doesn't show trim, fillers etc.

Not wedded to the green... just that I had originally pictured plain quartz counters, and I liked the green against the ivory window trim for contrast. If the granite is busy, it might have to be ivory walls too.

The lighting will be the fixtures below (over dining nook and sink) + pots. (Already bought)

what is the flooring? you have a pic of that w/the cabinet sample?

    following...

I can't wait to see what you decide.

The flooring is the parquet-look tile up top (which is actually porcelain). This is the door style (but minus the glazing):

I think I need to go to a couple of large stone yards and have a good look around before I'm going to feel comfortable committing. And to think just three days ago, I was sure I wanted a quartz kitchen... only to come face to face with some of these granite slabs and change my mind.

Welcome to my world! I am forcing myself to put off my choice until I can learn more about Danby marble. Give myself a few weeks . But, I too keep finding gorgeous stone options. I am just happy I am not alone Lea Dinell.

Keep searching until you found the one!

Thought I'd update with what we went with. Ended up with the leathered slab below. I'm a bit nervous about what it will look like horizontal and in a different light from the showroom, but hopefully it will work out. Will wait to paint and finalize backsplash after installation. Thanks to all for your helpful comments!

Very pretty. Just make sure to be there when it’s templated.

Oh Lea that is a lovely slab of granite. You must be so excited! There is movement, character, charm and soft warm colors (gray, beiges, taupes, browns, golds, even chocolate,...) to go with your cabinets. I think this is a lovely choice. Keep us posted.

Very nice!! I thought you would have gone with the titanium. Nevertheless, your choice is beautiful as well. Ensure that you continually post as your kitchen progresses!!

Great choices! Can't wait to see how it comes together.

natesg - Oh I plan to be!

boxer - thank you! :) I am rather excited.. looking forward to petting it more than looking at it, weirdly... it's so nice and lushly leathery. Are you any closer to making a decision about that marble?

Pugga70 - I did like the ruggedness of the Titanium most of all, and was happy to find that finish on a lighter colored stone after a bit of a hunt... most of the leathered stuff is dark granite where I am.

It was a tough decision between the slab we ended up picking and this one below... which is probably a bit more artsy and dramatic but has too much grey for our creamy cabinets and medium brown floors. Would make a lovely island for someone else.

    Thank you Lea,

We are waiting for the cabinetry to arrive and then I will have to make a choice. I have no idea... Sometimes I want Quartzite but then worry about the care. I think we will wind up with a pretty granite something like what you chose. Who knows maybe I can find a leather one I will fall for too.

    : )

Boxer - waiting for the cabinetry is a good thing, if you're not in a rush. That's what we did too, and it really helped immediately envisage what countertops would work in the space... makes you feel much less blindfolded. Good luck - I loved the look of quartzite over most granites too, and would have gone that route if I was less chicken.

Thanks Lea, I appreciate your encouraging words. Last time we did a reno we waited about 6 weeks almost 2 months after the cabinets to figure out what we wanted. My husband built these temporary plywood counters so we could use the kitchen. Everyone joked because you could not clean them, stuff spilled and you had to use paper towels or splinters would occur. It was worth it to wait and my husband keeps reminding me we don't have to rush.
