Help with stair remodel to modernize

Hi all, thanks in advance for your help!

I would like to update our staircase to make it more modern, but am a bit at loss for a vision. We'd like to keep this project as budget-friendly as possible. I was thinking of replacing the balusters with simple, straight replacements and staining the railing and stairs a darker color. It's obviously a challenge with the existing hardwood at the bottom of the stairs.

The top of the stairs (first picture) is what you see when you enter our front door (our main floor is the second floor). The bottom of the stairs (second picture) enters a wet bar area that adjoins a family room, wine cellar and guest rooms.

Please share your thoughts, suggestions and advice!

Oh, and I am new to houzz, so please let me know if there's anything else I should provide.

Blending the floors on both levels can be done by staining the risers dark and leving the tread in your wood floor tone.

Lowest cost would be changing out existing spindles for straight wood post.

You could also look into iron or black nickel metal railings.

if you change your balusters go round, not square. all of the angles on your square bases, on the curve, is part of what makes them look fussy not sleek.

Your house isn't modern at all. So I suggest staying away from the super-cool cables, glass etc. But do be careful, as you appear to have a beautiful home with good bones. Google "contemporary stairwells/staircases". You'll get a link to Houzz with 68K+ examples.

If you want a contemporary look that will pass inspections, that's safe and beautiful, I highly suggest you get with a local ironworks company. A lot less $ than you might think, and you won't have nearly the hassle of a DIY.
