You could also think about using a screen. It's like a wall only with cutouts in it and it's often in pieces you put together. I've seen them made out of concrete as well as light weight materials. Both can be painted. This would give you a measure of privacy without cutting off the visual flow of the room.

HI -- I like the plants so maybe just add a framed textured glass panel to make it more of a screen but it still allows light . If you don't like the glass idea , perhaps a laser cut wood screen . Even some birch wood spindles will look nice with the plants .

I like the plant wall! I think replacing the railing and the flooring is going to make a huge difference, so you should wait until that is done to see if you still, want to change that wall.

Have you considered a new curtain on the door window? Something new and fresh will make a big difference.

Is there a light fixture above the door?

Depending on the height of your ceilings, you could hang a piece of stained glass from above

HI -- If you don't want the bother of the plants and the dirt and the watering then remove the whole thing and replace with a floating panel . Like a big framed picture size panel with frosted or textured glass or some other type room divider material . There might be some photo examples on my ideabook if you want to look. Or search on Houzz or Pintrest etc. Just to make it more modern and less 60's .

You need to close off the top of that wall .. that looks incredibly dated to have plants in that.

I would not replace the wall with a railing. It's better for the room to the right to have that pony wall there. I think the container of plants is a cool, retro vibe.

I would not build that wall all the way up. It will close in your foyer too much.

After changing out the railing on the other side, see what you think of the wall. You may want to cap it off with the matching wood or surround the planter with wood.

After looking at a ton of pictures on Pinterest, I think you are right, graywings123. I have decided to keep the wall as it is for now. In the future I may cap it off. Thanks!
