Backsplash help

Need help deciding what backsplash! Trying to be a little farmhouse style this dark kitchen! Countertop samples are so small it’s hard to see but I’m considering

ice granite.

And here are pictures of the backsplashes at the store because they look so different with grout ....

Or subway tile?? I love subway tile But I can’t visualize it

the one where I posted different looks of the slabs and all of the backsplashes.

You must wait on the splash. I can't tell you how many dilemmas we read on here about people who pick everything at once, only to be so disappointed after it all goes in. why? it doesn't work. Is your mom a kitchen designer? contractor? No? then listen to what we are telling you. they can't install the backsplash anyways until all the other items are installed. what's the big rush??

but hey, if your mom is footing the bill for the tile, then fine. that way if you don't like it and rip it out, it's not costly to you. if not, it's your money?? your kitchen? tell mom thanks, but you've decided to wait a bit. by all means, get samples ready.

I’m also leaning more towards st Cecilia white granite. I looked at quartz but found the ones available near me to be too white white or too gray

    nooooo don't do Santa Cecelia. it's so,,,,ugh...

@beth yes agreed! No it’s our money just her time to meet with contractors, I will discuss with contractor on Monday and see if it that’s big of a deal to just wait, I would rather wait anyhow as I’m so overwhelmed with all the decisions

very smart. when you're overwhelmed, you tend to pick something just to get it out of the way. you will be living w/this for a long time. don't pick under duress! you never pick the right thing. it's going to take time to paint the cabs, and cut the granite and set up an install. he won't even know when to schedule the tile guys. so, no need on picking something this week. not going to make a difference.

@ Beth what would you suggest?

Santa Cecilia white I think is different than that picture beth

My friend has the first one and I love it.

nicole. that pattern is basically the same. the white is more of a white tone than the golden tone cecelia. I've helped quite a few people on here w/finding backsplashes for it. it's also one of the granites that has been around since the 90's and considered 'basic'. if you like it, great,,,it's your kitchen.

I would suggest something a bit lighter. there are tons of other quartz manufacturers. Caesarstone has many nice ones.

Taj Majal quartzite is very pretty and has the warm tones to go w/your room

Delicatus, or Alaska white can have some nice slabs

just go to a few diff stone yards and look at what they have.

I’m going to look at more quartz, I’m thinking maybe a color like chakra beige would pull together everything and be simple enough to go with the floors

Maybe chakra beige counters and these tiles as a backsplash? These backsplash tiles are pretty pricey but if I’m going to wait maybe I just wait a few months and invest in this option? I’m going to find out about ordering a sample

or possibly a darker beige/greige countertop. Maybe even a light brown?

Pick the counter tops first. THEN pick the cabinet colour. Then wait until it's installed to choose back splash and grout colour. Grout colour is often overlooked but both back splash and grout should tie in all your hard elements. The back splash has the most choice and price points and should be done last.

The advice to wait for the backsplash is a good one. You said you’re hoping to change the floor to a wood one so why add to your stress by feeling like these three decisions have to be made now?
Have the granite counter cut without a 4” piece and just paint the backsplash for now. Move in, unpack and live with the cabinet/countertop decision for a while. If you use eggshell paint the backsplash will clean up easily. (I waited a year before I chose my backsplash in a former house.)
Beth has given you SOLID advice. You should heed her warning about rushing these decisions. They’re permanent and so many people are unhappy after they pick all three (four if you count the floor).
Just take a breath and slow this process down. There are too many backsplash options and you don’t have a good sense of the walls, counter, floor and cabinet colors.
    Good luck!

Keep the backsplash simple. I can see you're drawn to more complicated designs like arabesque and others that are similar. They're pretty on their own but paired with all the movement in your floors and counters it isn't going to work. It'll be way too busy. You'll get dizzy.

I am for sure waiting on backsplash, I like the idea of moving in and taping a couple of ideas to the wall and then deciding. Countertops have to be picked now and I know for sure I want white cabinets. Im looking for a greige color quartz, after sleeping on it I think I need slightly darker more plain countei

Nicole, So after all this, may I ask why you have to change your cabinets? I actually love the current color you have now...(if it were honey oak I'd say go for it, but they are a rich, warm brown)....

Can't you leave as is and then just change out your backspash only for now (and remove the 4" splash)? Wait until you paint the walls. Then, find a nice travertine or herringbone or subway (nothing busy). I'd do a few recessed cans near your cabinets too to brighten it up. Your counters aren't bad....

Then, you'll save $10-20k when all said and done (counters, cabs, sink, faucets, hood range, etc., etc) and you can live with it for a while until you have your look in mind...

Then, do a more full renovation when you are able to remove the flooring (which is going to compete with everything). Simple wood floors are elegant and go with everything.

Hi Laura Mac, I have been toiling over the cabinets for weeks.... they are great but my dream kitchen for as long as I can remember has been white (even before fixer upper came along lol) and I almost didn’t want the house because if the cabinets but went with the house anyways because of schools and location. So they are super nice but I want this to be the last home we buy and so I think it should have the kitchen I always imagined and it will be super nice when we install wood floors :)

Nicole, can you share what the name of the tile is that is the curvy one from your initial post? It's the second pic, and with your new cabinet plan, you had it square rather than on end.

Nicole, totally understand! Can you pull up the kitchen floors now and do hardwood? If you're going to drop big $$$ on re-doing your cabs, new granite counters, backsplash, sink, fixtures, you may as well do it all together rather than trying to work around your current flooring. (That's the reason why mentioning just do a backsplash for now and then take time to create your dream kitchen....)

Decided to paint cabinets white, have Alaska granite going in next week and then we will select a backsplash when I can see it all together. Here are some progress photos

Looks great! I’m relieved you will wait on the back splash. Don’t do the 4”piece of granite - just paint until you can take a deep breath and move in. Then shop strategically. The tile selections are too varied to rush this.
I waited a year when I had too much remodeling to do on a house. Then I took my time to shop the backsplash. Never regretted it.

    @Nicole, wow, great progress!

I've been noticing these tiles in a lot of beautiful kitchens....might be really pretty. Very, very simple, but a little sparkle, very classic and clean, updated size (3x12). I saw these in person last week.

Laura Mac, I have a sample of this!! I liked it a lot, I can’t wait until the counters are done and I can see some samples in the space

Ok it’s time to pick a backsplash! Here is where we are at, I am thinking a picture frame feature behind the stove using the patterned tile you see but I haven’t decided on tile for the rest, I’m considering subway tile.

Using terms like farm house make it difficult to assess your style preferences. I don't see any of the backsplashes you have chosen as working with what I consider would be a farm house kitchen. Can you post some kitchens you like? Don't worry about adjectives. A picture is with a thousand words. To me, I would do no backsplash except for behind the cooktop. If you want a tile backsplash, they pick a plain subway tile. Good luck.

Looks like the wall color blends with the counters and the cabinets. Choose a plain tile that mimics that color.

White subway would also work well for your counters and cabinets.

    @Nicole, it looks so GREAT!!

I think a classic white subway in a more current, larger format like 4x10 or 3x12. Your floors and counters are busy, so something classic with a twist (crackle, bevel or snow glass)....

nicole, the backsplash should prob be a solid color if you want to use those shapes. arabesque, two colors and your countertop, is a bit too much.

Unless you use two that are dark,,,like this black quartz and antique mirror. I love this one

    https://tilebar.com/veranda-shadow-ridge-quartz-and-mirror-tile.html

here is Alaska White w/a larger hex tile. it works because it's a solid color

I also like the entire wall done in the herringbone like this. don't do anything over the stove.

with a black or charcoal grout, it would compliment the dark tones in your granite

I also like a black tile w/white grout. did the fish scales here for you

love a black subway tile too. similar counter as yours w/a slight black iridescent tile

look at DalTile Horizon in moonlight and tide. they are a soft gray

I really like the tile near the top that is standing on it's corner. White gloss it will go with everything and be easy maintenance. I would not use a dark or iridescent tile as it would be too much. The backsplash should complement the kitchen not over take it. Simple is best and your counter top will work better too.

Punch it out with accessories that you can change up easily.

@Nicole, those are all really pretty! And I do like the gray arabesque! Wow! However, can you photoshop a layout from a far away shot? I think it might get too busy as well, but do what you LOVE!

The first photo in the white might be the winner for me even though. Are those 2 different colors/finishes? Whether you do subway or herringbone (my fave), it will be so pretty. I prefer the grout to be about the same color as the tile.

@Beth, you are getting to be a PRO at photoshop! It's so helpful to visualize!

I think the herringbone look with light grout will give you your white dream kitchen. The other two-toned one is way too busy for that fabulous granite. You can’t have 3 headliners in your Kitchen Show. The countertop has great movement and color, so don’t compete with it doing a fancy backsplash.
Beth H has great ideas and photoshops better than anyone else. Look at how simple all of her photos are.

Art, on another post, just shared photos of his kitchen. same granite, Alaska.

this looks really good. if you don't want mirror, then do a graphite or charcoal metallic type of tile.

Here is the final product for now....

I have to figure out what to do with that room off of the kitchen. It’s a boring space and currently just storage. After all this work I’m a little disappointed, I’m hoping working on the attached room will help.

Did you change the color of your light bulbs? your floor is now less pink I guess the before was also the wood color reflecting on them

Make it the same as the countertop ...timeless!

Yes changed lightbulbs out for white light Led ones and the paint also helped to lighten them up, before the paint on the walls was yellow.

@Nicole, is that a 4x12 crackle glass backsplash? I think it all looks so GREAT!! Do you love it?

    @beth yes! Turned out great!!

Haven’t really decorated yet, I need to go shopping and get some color and finish the room the kitchen looks in to
