Everything comes around again...

Got the June issue of the UK House & Garden today. Imagine my surprise when I saw an article about COLORED porcelain bathroom fixtures!

The Water Monopoly, a UK company, has come out with a new line of pastel bathroom fixtures. They come in various pastels.

They also showed this tub in white with bright orange feet. Now that, I might embrace as the feet could most likely be changed.

When we bought our house 34 years ago, we added a bath for my DD. We were on a VERY tight budget and I found an old clawfoot tub at a local antique mall. The inside was white and other than a bit or rust stain at the drain, it was in good condition; the outside, a disaster. It had layers and layers of old paint, much of it badly chipped. My DH spent the winter in the garage sanding off that old paint; he went through the motors of two electric drills he used a wire brush to remove the old paint.

When it was down to the bare finish, he primed it and then painted it a deep raspberry to match the bows on the Jane Churchill wallpaper in the bathroom. All these years later, it's still a stunner!

It's a bit of a risk to go with colored fixtures and taps; tastes change, these are VERY pricey and not everyone really wants a yellow washbasin. But thought it was interesting...

Too funny! In my last house the master bath fixtures were a similar shade of blue. The first time we put the house on the market many buyers commented that the house "needed work". Took the house off the market (for other reasons), remodeled the bath after the shower leaked and put it back on the market a year later. Multiple offers and people loved the bathroom. To us the blue fixtures weren't our preferred color but were pretty in their own way. It will be interesting to see if the colors take hold and become a trend again.

I had to go with grey for colored fixtures, but people think even that is pushing the boundaries. I wanted pink or pale blue, but those had both been discontinued the year before I was ready to start.

I like colored fixtures. (not pink) Problem with them though is that they are generally available in the color trends of the time. That's okay until everyone says "Eww". Unless you are willing to remodel based on trends, you have to be a strong person to outlast the "eww" until the color becomes "vintage".

    People are awfully fickle.

I recently saw a 1950s ranch, 3br-1ba, and the bath fixtures were a very pretty grey. The best of both worlds! Trendy grey and back-again color!

Anglophilia I'm so curious about your raspberry bath tub and wallpaper, any chance of seeing a picture? :-)

I just remembered when reading pal's comment above that the master bath, which we remodeled 4 years ago, had gray sinks, a gray cast iron tub, and a gray toilet. In fact, the carpet in the master bedroom was also dark gray. This house was built in 1980 so I guess the builder was ahead of his time?

My parents have gray fixtures in one bathroom, sandy beige in another. Both look really great. Only the powder room has white because the contractor left the beige or gray (?) ones outside before installation, and they were stolen. So he sneaked whites one in :)

I have never liked that dusty/pastel pink and blue of the old fixtures. It was also the same pink/blue during the early 80s country/geese phase. I've never seen a bathroom with colored fixtures that I liked enough that I wouldn't want to gut it.

I like colored, because well if it's utilitarian I'd rather it be colored lol. And it's all new to me since we didn't have these trends. So to me it's like "wow, cool"

But of course I'll have my preferences. As with every color.

One can get them they're just awfully expensive. Or one needs to find old. I was looking for a muted green toilet bowl for example. Lol. couln't find it...

Kohler has had a grey color of some sort since 1952.

I think a red or raspberry bathtub sounds really great. I like warm colors in bathrooms - cold colors make me feel cold unless I am in the tropics. In the 1980s I redid my mother's bathroom in white, black, gray, and red, and the red really warmed up the room. The tiles were mostly white with some black sprinkled in, and with a red border. The floor was gray, and I used a subtle gray tone-on-tone bamboo patterned wallpaper from England. The pattern in the wallpaper was visible only from the way the light hit it, as it was made by varying the textured of the wallpaper. Then I told my mother that she could only have black, white, and red towels in that bathroom, and so she moved the other towels to the other bathroom.

    Will do!

I hope colors make a comeback. I've had to lose my pink toilet and my pink sink is rusting out. I might have to redo my pink bathroom altogether, depending on the plumbing situation but I do NOT want to lose my pink tub. You can't beat the quality of old enameled cast iron tubs, you know, if you ignore the lead content. :P Not to mention I'd have to knock a hole in the side of the house to remove the old tub.

I don't know how to mix a pink tub with the current boring fixtures. I need pink.

my bath is 1961 blue. Blue tub, toilet, sink, counter top. white tile on walls. blue shades of mosaic tile floor. I have always loved it! I get so many compliments on my blue bathroom it's rediculous. I can see it coming back in style.

judymn would you mind sharing pictures of your blue bathroom? I'm intrigued! Yours must be done much better than ours because we certainly never received any compliments on it. (It was 1970s if that makes any difference.) We didn't mind the blue, but we also didn't find anyone else loving it.

    Fori,

Try here, but act fast. I think these may be residual stock

Actually a number of the pink shades were delicate although there were a couple Pepto Bismol shades.

Innocent Blush was so pale that it was barely beyond off white.

    1. I've never seen a bathroom with colored fixtures that I liked enough that I wouldn't want to gut it.

Funny, that's how I feel about beigeish stone look porcelain bathrooms with accent tiles and white fixtures most of the time, even if they are brand new.

I have no idea how I created the number.

lol pal. Sometimes sites seem to automatically bullet/number posts. I've never cared enough to figure out why.

Love colored fixtures. The blue tub above is divine. The only issues are resale and for some committing to a color for a couple of decades may not work. The house I currently live in will stay white, plan on selling within 5 years. Next house will be my forever house and I am thinking a colored tub would be fabulous.

Good luck finding an American one. Shades of grey or beige are the only "colors" left. And no cast iron that I know of. I think I got one of the last colored cast iron tubs considered new stock in America.

The ones I hope never come back are brown and black. With other colors you can see Clear, clean water. Brown, Black, no

Black seems to have been available since 1927 in every decade except the 1960s.
