Do you want that many glass doors? You could do glass on one wall and solid door on the other. My kitchen is smaller and function was more important than form, but I have different widths of stacked cabinets (I did not want to pay to make very many of them glass fronted though)

I decided the glass doors would be nice for additional lighting and also to lighten the look a bit. I have zero upper cabinets right now so I'm afraid of it looking claustrophobic. I did consider closing in the doors over the pantry because the cabinet over the fridge has no glass. The fridge and pantry are on opposite sides, so maybe that'll help balance it out?

The outside cabinets are 25.5 middle is 33"

I agree, everyone have different size upper cabinets, so it will be fine. I like that's they all glass front will look really nice (don't forget lighting there). But I think cabinets above pantry is too wide. We did 3 cabinets for pantry to avoid this issue.

Do you think your storage was affected by using the 3 cabinets instead of one? The 42 inch pantry seems so luxurious to me. Of course I have no pantry now so anything will improve my situation.

It is really two instead of one. One slim and one wide like yours, just not as wide. My 3 together is 55, so now I am not sure it will work if you only have 42, might be better to go with your original plan or just made upper doors go up to the top.

My kitchen designer isn't offering a lot of input I'm afraid. I'm having trouble visualizing how obvious the size difference will be

I think the cabinets that hold the stove and the opposite side about the same place protruding also helps the eye not compare each and expect exact symmetry. But to my eye, you said they are closer to the same size, but they look spot-on.

Thank you allie. I couldn't be happier with the way things are coming together. My glass guy can certainly attest to the fact that most the uppers are different sizes, but they are much closer than they were before! And you're right, the differences in depth help too.

Doing that in our current remodel - stacked cabinets, different widths. Glass in all the uppers. I think it's an attractive look, and actually prefer it for our kitchen rather than the same widths throughout - it breaks it up IMO, but truthfully, not doing it for that reason. I need different widths for storage and space purposes. Also, we are doing a small cabinet pantry (24" W) across the room and it too will have the glass upper stacked cabinet. Our fridge will also, above it. I think it might break it up too much if you go with half and half (half glass, half paneled) - sounds like I'm picky huh? Go with your gut, and your personal preferences : )

2ManyDiversions, that was what my husband said about half and half.

My gut was scrambled for a while with too-many-decisions paralysis, but it's becoming more confident.

What size is your upper cabinets with the glass doors?

The glass uppers are 18 inches tall.

@notsewmuch - Will you please post photos of your entire kitchen from the same vantage point as in your before photo in your second post above? The ones you posted of the sides look very nice - I would REALLY love to see how your entire kitchen remodel turned out! Thanks!!

Oh wow, I have been searching this very question, I’m so glad I found this discussion, around my stove area there aren’t many cabinets at all especially with a large decorative hood being put in, so there is 1 cabinet on the left of the stove hood, 1 on the right and a smaller double cabinet next to that cabinet, which would make the top lighted cubes smaller, this smaller double cabinet is above an oven. I’m waiting for a sketch, so these are different size lighted tops as well and I had no idea if that would look OK?
